Job Description

Department Description Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment: School of Electrical and Information Engineering. Selected Topics in Sociology. Associate Lecturer: The School of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) is looking for a suitable person to fill the position at the academic level of an associate lecturer in Selected Topics in Sociology. This course is intended to help students build a critical understanding of social analysis through the discipline of sociology. It provides a basic introduction to Sociology and focuses on key topics within the broad discipline. The course explores what it means to be an engineering professional by introducing students to professional ethics, and the identification, analysis and resolution of ethical problems in an engineering context. Brief Description The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research output of the school of EIE – including supervising undergraduate students. The applicant must be experienced in multi-disciplinary teaching and research in the effect of technology on society, specifically the impact of machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data. Qualifications: The applicant must have an MSc and the intention of completing a PhD. Duties: The duties involve: – Teaching Selected Topics in Sociology to final year undergraduate engineering students; – Contributing to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment’s common first year; – Undertaking various administrative duties in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering; – Contributing towards the research output of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering; – Conceptualising and supervising the capstone projects of one or two pairs of final year undergraduate engineering students; – Supervising postgraduate students in the School. Should the successful candidate not have a South African identity document or a permanent residence permit, proof will need to be provided of a current valid work visa or visa endorsed for work as an Associate Lecturer at Wits.
