Job Description

Duties and responsibilities: Strategic and Relationships Directs the production of accurate and timely financial information, which supports decision-making, through methods which reflect current accounting and financial management principles. Promoting research and innovation as a strategic imperative for the University of the Free State (UFS) – including establishing and nurturing relationships within UFS community to increase awareness of third-stream income generation activities and specifically the impact it creates through commercialization and uptake Establishing and nurturing effective relationships with key stakeholders within the Southern African Research and Innovation and National System of Innovation (NSI). Interact strategically and synergistically, efficiently and effectively with key stakeholders/management including the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, DVC/Directorate for Research Development and Deans of Faculties Directing and supervising the development, implementation and updating of policies and procedures, appropriate of processes and internal controls that meet operational and management needs, and ensuring compliance. Unit Efficiency and Effectiveness Recruiting and mentoring/developing professionals as required to implement the Directorate: Research Development and Office of Innovation and Business Developments objectives Driving and/or facilitating negotiations of commercialisation transactions, e.g. licensing/start-ups/contract research/joint ventures within mandates Supporting the regulation of sound financial management and governance where the UFS engages in contract research, joint ventures and collaboration engagements. Designing and implementing best practice business processes and supporting administrative and/or IT systems, for efficient and effective management and record keeping Undertaking any other managerial functions required to meet operational functioning requirements, to the extent of available resources Networking, Promotion and Thought Leadership Presentation at workshops, conferences as part of own development and positioning of the institution and the unit as a research-led university in South Africa. Inherent requirements: CA (SA) qualification. A minimum of five (5) years’ relevant working experience related to the duties and responsibilities. A minimum of five (5) year’s management experience. Registration with a Professional Body as a CA (SA). Required competencies: • Results Orientated: o A strong passion for, and proven track record in, establishing systems, processes and practices to ensure efficient and effective delivery on objectives. • Strategic Thinking: Proven ability to: o Operate at a strategic and policy formulating level within complex corporate organisations o Solve complex problems o Drive complex, long term processes involving complex stakeholder relationships at the highest levels o Manage multiple internal and external stakeholders. o Prioritise and focus on material issues. • Business Acumen: o Significant experience of software related to own area of specialism, with the ability to build basic models or tools. o Sound working knowledge of policies, regulations, and legislation in area of specialism. o Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. o In-depth knowledge of business education/specialist area. o Financial management experience and commercial acumen. o Ability to interpret financial statements. o Knowledge of RIMS & People Soft. • Leading: o Excellent communication skills, and proven ability to build sound relationships across a range of different stakeholders. o Work within and manage a diverse team of professionals. Recommendations: A minimum of eight (8) years’ relevant working experience related to the duties and responsibilities. Term of office: Contract appointment: 5 years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term. Assumption of duties: As soon as possible.
