Job Description

The Chemistry Department within the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town seeks to fill a permanent academic position in physical chemistry at lectureship level. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. We seek to add to the department’s teaching of physical chemistry at a senior undergraduate level, as well as strengthen present research themes in physical chemistry, such as biophysical chemistry and chemical glycobiology, supramolecular chemistry and computational chemistry. Requirements include: For appointment at Lecturer Level: A PhD in physical chemistry or an appropriate cognate discipline, with at least one year of relevant postdoctoral experience. Evidence of publishing research output. Teaching experience would be advantageous. For appointment at Senior Lecturer level: A PhD in physical chemistry or an appropriate cognate discipline, with at least three years of postdoctoral experience. A track record of independent research, including publications and postgraduate supervision or mentoring of junior researchers. Success in securing external research funding would be advantageous. Teaching experience at university level, or equivalent would be advantageous. Experience in curriculum development would be advantageous. Responsibilities include: Develop a research programme in an area of focus in the Department. Develop and teach courses in the sub-discipline of physical chemistry at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service courses) and give specialist lectures at Honours (4th year) level. Supervise Honours, MSc and PhD students. Contribute to administration in the Department.
