Job Description

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

The Faculty of Education has a rich history of engaging with key issues in South African education, and offers innovative, research‐based teacher education programmes and cutting-edge interdisciplinary postgraduate programmes. The Department of Educational Studies is dedicated to clarifying the role of Teacher Education in the broader societal transformative project. Our courses therefore introduce students to the diverse, and often conflicting, foundations of education practice. Our research and teaching interests and expertise are in the areas of: history and philosophy of education; sociology of education and critical curriculum studies; educational leadership, management and policy studies; educational technologies; comparative education; and research methodology.

The Department of Educational Studies invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the post of LECTURER: Teacher Education (Foundation Phase Teaching), commencing on 01 July 2022. The incumbent must be able to actively contribute to research and teaching in our undergraduate teacher education programmes, serve on relevant Department and Faculty committees and participate in the Department’s social and community engagement projects.


The key performance areas for this post are to:

  • Teach and facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in early childhood education and Foundation Phase teaching
  • Conduct research and publish in early childhood education and Foundation Phase teaching
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research and teaching experiences
  • Provide academic leadership and administration
  • Engage in curriculum development, including methods of teaching and assessment
Minimum Requirements
  • M.Ed in a field relevant to Teacher Education
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate levels
  • Evidence of academic publications and other scholarly engagements in the field of Teacher Education
  • Expertise and relevant experience in Foundation Phase teaching and/or early childhood education.
  • Evidence of working with university e-learning platforms using online and blended teaching approaches

Recommendations / Added Advantage:

  • A PhD, or progress towards a relevant Doctoral qualification, in a field relevant to Teacher Education
  • Experience in postgraduate supervision
  • Experience in Teaching Practice and teacher development
