Job Description

Department Description Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment: School of Electrical and Information Engineering. The Johannesburg Lightning Research Laboratory at WITS University. Lecturer (Part-time at 36 ¼ hours per week – 90% full-time equivalent): The School of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) is looking for a suitable person to fill the position at the academic level of a Lecturer, as part of the Johannesburg Lightning Research Laboratory (JLRL). The JLRL, under the Center of Excellence on High Voltage Engineering (CEHVE) is one of the School of EIE’s flagship projects for WITS FEBE 100 club. Brief Description Lecturer (Part-time at 36 ¼ hours per week – 90% full-time equivalent): The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research output of the JLRL , including supervising postgraduate students and managing research projects and collaborations, as well as performing teaching and administrative duties within the School of EIE. The applicant must have published research in the field of lightning physics and engineering, with particular expertise in the study of lightning through high-speed optical videography but also lightning electromagnetic fields and waveform analysis. The applicant must have some experience in lecturing/coordinating subjects related to physics and engineering, such as electronics and electromagnetics. Qualifications: The applicant must have a PhD and a research record, as evidenced by peer reviewed publications. Teaching experience at a tertiary level is an added advantage. Duties: The duties involve: – Teaching electronics, electromagnetics and lightning protection (under HV related subjects) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; – Teaching and coordinating other undergraduate and postgraduate level courses; – Undertaking various administrative duties in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering; – Contributing towards the research output of the Johannesburg Lightning Research Laboratory and the Center of Excellence on High Voltage Engineering and the School; – Supervising postgraduate students with the School; – Managing research collaborations and projects.
