Job Description

We invite suitable applications for the post of Librarian: Acquisitions in UCT Libraries. The primary purpose of this post is the efficient acquisition of monographs, audio-visual material and information in other formats, in print or electronic media, excluding subscriptions. Requirements include: Appropriate University-based library qualification at NQF Level 8 (PG Diploma or Honours degree or 4 Year Bachelor’s degree at NQF 8) and, 2 years’ experience in an academic or research related environment. Knowledge of scholarly information resources and associated budget processes. Experience with electronic library and information tools (for example the Acquisitions Module of a library management system). Sound interpersonal skills and client service orientation, with evidence of good professional relationships. • An understanding of the complexity of the academic environment. Responsibilities include: Acquisitions: Ensuring that the Acquisition Department purchases print & electronic books and audio-visual library materials and other formats quickly and cost effectively. Verifying orders sent weekly to the vendors ensuring that vendors and funds are correctly assigned and monitoring the acknowledgement of their receipt by the vendors. Placing orders with and monitoring the use of the credit card ensuring it is being used appropriately. Evaluating and negotiating terms and conditions of electronic resource license agreements. Resource management: Finance: Capturing funds on to the library management system acquisitions module. Monitoring expenditure of funds and providing reports on ordering and expenditure. Assisting with compiling the annual budget, and monthly and quarterly reports. Collections management: Ensuring that the Collection Development Guidelines are adhered to. Making recommendations and decisions regarding the most appropriate format in which to purchase a work, depending on price and lending model. Stakeholder engagement: Ensuring that effective communication exists with all UCT Libraries departments, with academics and with suppliers. Building and maintaining relationships with local and international vendors.
