Job Description

REQUIREMENTS: An appropriate qualification that allows registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry. Experience: Grade 1: none. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA in a normal specialty. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with HPCSA in a normal specialty. A valid driver’s license. Knowledge and Skills: Evidence of research capability. Experience in lecturing students. DUTIES: Provide clinical leadership and supervision to District and Primary Health Teams. Work with MDT to assess patients with mental emotional and behavioural disorders, including substance related mental health problems and develop intervention plans with MDT. Review and managing of State Patients who are on LOA or conditional discharged. Support the MDT to develop and implement strategies and interventions targeted towards mental health promotion and prevention. Training and upskilling of colleagues and other staff in mental health with focus on primary care interventions. Liaise with colleagues and stakeholders within health system and multisectorally to advance primary health strategies of mental health delivery and refer on cases that need further intervention. Develop and manage a referral system between the District Mental Health Team, primary care mental health clinics, secondary care and other health institutions that offer a higher level of care systems. Supporting mental health clinics in the District by providing multidisciplinary guidance for complicated cases. Support the District Team in conjunction with MDT to analyse mental health service and usage statistics and project resource needs to ensure services meet the community needs. Establishing and maintaining effective Teaching & learning, research supervision of both undergraduate and post graduate programs in the Department of Psychiatry and Faculty of Health Sciences at the WSU in line with the professional bodies.
