Key responsibilities: Manage projects, research and conduct investigations on energy modelling and related topics Provide leadership in formulating research questions and developing study assumptions Provide research direction to the Energy Centre on energy planning and energy modelling Generate technical reports, articles, conference papers and presentations aimed at energy modelling locally and internationally Provide training on energy planning related topics to CSIR employees and externally as required Provide the strategic evidence-base and thought leadership to inform strategic immediate and long-term energy sector decision-making at national/provincial/local government as well as enterprise levels Formulate research proposals and develop relationships with potential clients and collaborators in R&D around system operations topics Manage contract research and development and ensure adherence to schedule and budget; Collaborate with CSIRs Business Development and Commercialisation (BD&C) on conceptual energy-related business opportunities; Support the CSIR Energy Centres research agenda with a particular emphasis on energy planning and systems modelling. Qualifications, skills and experience: A Masters degree in electrical/mechanical/industrial engineering, mathematics, science or equivalent with at least ten years working experience in the energy sector, of which five years should be in energy modelling specifically; A Doctoral degree in electrical/mechanical/industrial engineering, mathematics, science or equivalent will be advantageous; Proficiency in suitable energy modelling software tools applied in the energy sector. These could include inter alia energy systems modelling using PLEXOS, OSEMOSYS, TIMES or others; Extensive experience and understanding of the energy sector across all energy carriers including coal, nuclear, natural gas, liquid fuels and the growing renewable energy industry; Strong network in the public and private sector (local and international) as links to energy modelling and a track record in obtaining contract R&D funding and managing such projects. Good presentation skills and ability to present to a broad range of potential stakeholders. The following expert level experience is required as a minimum: o Experience in working with a team of energy modellers o Various energy modelling approaches for energy systems o Modelling experience and skills in energy planning tools/software o Scenario definitions/planning; The following experience/knowledge will be advantageous, but not essential o The South African power system o South African energy policies, regulations, codes and standards Strong inter-personal skills, able to work with a diverse team of colleagues with backgrounds across science, engineering, business, economics and policy.
