Job Description

Key Performance Areas: · Accountable for day-to-day control of income and expenditure in line with budget and funding allocations, University policies, legislation and best accounting practices. · Advising Head of School and School Executive on budget planning, integrating Council and external funding. · Accountable for generation and analysis of monthly income and expenditure reports for Head of School and academic staff, and timeously alerting them of potential problems. · Responsible for ensuring that procurement in the school is conducted according to university policies and the Delegation of Authority Document. · Responsible for the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts, monitoring and reporting against budget on a monthly basis and consolidation of project budgets against funding agreements and operational needs on an annual basis. · Accountable for compliance with University Fixed Assets Policies and Procedures in the Faculty of Science, including implementation of door lists and accurate recording of information in the School Asset Register. · Accountable for overseeing financial processes, procedures and controls in an efficient, effective and professional manner in compliance with University policies, procedures and GAAP/IFRS (SA) Statements. · Responsible for overseeing the functions and performance of direct subordinates in the school. · Ensuring speedy procurement of all services, laboratory consumables, equipment and bookings for School teaching and research activities by School finance team. · Responsible for processing postgraduate student and postdoctoral fellow financial support documents. · Responsible for conference/workshop/short course organization and overseeing all financial aspects of events. · Responsible for projects and external fund reporting. · Responsible for debtors and age analysis. · Involved in assisting in the execution of key Faculty Finance projects. · Expected to undertake any other tasks or activities which fall within the general functioning of the School of Geosciences and Faculty of Science as determined by the Head of School and Faculty Business Manager. Key Competencies: · Computer literate (MS Word, Email, Internet) and advanced Excel knowledge. · Attention to detail and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in preparing and entering financial information. · Excellent interpersonal and people management skills. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. · Problem-solving skills, ability to take initiative. · Excellent time management, ability to prioritise, make decisions and solve problems in a complex environment with competing demands. · Have a very high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness Minimum Requirements: · Grade 12 + a recognised Bookkeeping/Accounting qualification Diploma/Certificate. A degree will be advantageous. · 10 years relevant experience in a financial and accounting environment at a senior level (experience at the University or tertiary educational sector will be advantageous). · Good understanding of accounting terminology, principles, processes and practical application thereof. · Knowledge of University operating systems (Oracle, GL Wand, SIMS, WAMS) and processes.
