Job Description

Key responsibilities: Handle customer applications and requests for testing to ensure customer needs are understood and the customer is informed of the services the laboratory can offer; Compile quotations in line with the laboratory pricing model in order to meet the financial targets of the laboratory; Liaise with customers regarding scheduling of tests, special requirements for testing and to keep customers updated with progress; Ensure testing of standardised routine tests are carried out according to established test methods (national, international and in-house developed) and standard operating procedures; Give guidance to laboratory assistants in sample preparation and test set-up to ensure validity of test results and to prevent damage to equipment; Accountable for ensuring traceability of test items throughout their life in the laboratory; Compile test certificates in line with laboratory quality standards to deliver a professional product to the customer; Inspect machine daily prior to testing to ensure that the machine and related equipment are serviceable and safe to use; Ensure all technical aspects related to the use of the various test machines are carried out safely and correctly; Ensure safety of people involved in the execution of a test and that of visitors witnessing the test. Qualifications, skills and experience: A national diploma in mechanical engineering with at least one year experience in mechanical testing; One year experience in operating machines, using measuring equipment, dealing with customers, writing technical reports and processing data; A sound knowledge of physics, statics, dynamics and strength of materials at tertiary education level is required for this role, Must be computer literate and proficient in word processing and basic spreadsheet operations; Must have the capacity to grasp technical concepts; Must have good communication in English (written and verbal); Must have the working knowledge of ISO 17025; Must have the ability to pay attention to detail and be diligent; Must physically be able to assist laboratory assistant in two-person physical tasks; Drivers licence will be an advantage;
