    The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) plays a pivotal role in uplifting rural communities across the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. By addressing key challenges such as food security, economic disparity, and agricultural development, DRDAR ensures that rural residents have access to sustainable growth opportunities. A major initiative in achieving this vision is the DRDAR Bursary Programme, which seeks to equip talented youth with the education and skills needed to drive rural development and agricultural progress.


    About the DRDAR

    The DRDAR is a government entity committed to the socio-economic transformation of the Eastern Cape through innovative agricultural programs, infrastructure development, and land reform. By collaborating with local stakeholders, the department fosters empowerment and provides essential support to smallholder farmers and rural communities.

    About the DRDAR Bursary Programme

    For the 2025 academic year, the DRDAR invites students to apply for its bursary program. This initiative is tailored for individuals who are passionate about agricultural innovation and rural development, offering financial assistance to pursue studies in critical fields.

    Fields of Study Covered

    The bursary is available for Bachelor of Social Science Degrees in the following disciplines:

    • Agricultural Engineering
    • Bio-Resource Engineering

    What the Bursary Covers

    The DRDAR Bursary offers financial support for the following expenses:

    • Registration fees
    • Tuition fees
    • Prescribed textbooks
    • Accommodation
    • Meals

    Note: The bursary does not cover outstanding student debt.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify for the bursary:

    1. South African Citizenship: Applicants must hold South African citizenship.
    2. Education Background: Completion of Grade 12/Matric/NCV with Mathematics and Physical Science.
    3. Field of Study: Intention to study or current enrollment in an approved degree program within the specified fields.
    4. Household Income: Total household income must not exceed R350,000 per annum (or R600,000 for those living with disabilities).
    5. Unemployment: Preference is given to unemployed youth.
    6. Disabilities: Applications from youth with disabilities are encouraged.
    7. Residency: Priority is given to applicants from the Eastern Cape, although students from other provinces are welcome to apply.
    8. Tertiary Institution: Applicants must be accepted or registered at a recognized institution in South Africa.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Download the Application Form
      • Click here to download the DRDAR Bursary Application 2025 (PDF)
      • Alternatively, visit a nearby DRDAR office to collect the application form.
    2. Complete the Application
      Ensure all sections of the form are filled in accurately.
    3. Prepare Supporting Documents
      Submit clear, certified copies of the following:
      • South African ID document
      • Matric results or certificate
      • Full academic record (if applicable)
      • Proof of admission/registration from a recognized tertiary institution
      • Proof of residence (dated within the last 3 months)
      • Parent/guardian ID documents and proof of income (latest payslips, affidavit, pension/grant proof)
      • Details of any other bursary or sponsorship (if applicable)
    4. Submit Your Application
      • Email your completed application form and supporting documents to bursary@drdar.gov.za.
      • Include “DRDAR Bursary 2025” in the email subject line.

    Important: Applications submitted via fax or hand delivery will not be accepted.

    • Closing Date: 24 January 2025
      Applications received after this date will not be considered. Apply early to avoid disappointment.
