About the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP)
The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) at UKZN is a world-renowned research unit focused on understanding the mechanisms of HIV infection and developing new strategies to combat the virus. The HPP is at the forefront of research, working closely with global partners to advance knowledge and improve outcomes for people living with HIV.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Technician will play a critical role in supporting the research activities of the HPP. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory’s day-to-day operations and ensuring the smooth running of experiments. Key responsibilities include:
- Maintenance of Cell Lines: The technician will manage and maintain cell lines used in various experiments, ensuring they are in optimal condition for research purposes.
- Equipment Maintenance: Regular upkeep of laboratory equipment is essential. The technician will be responsible for ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly and is regularly serviced.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): The technician will review and write SOPs to ensure laboratory processes are up to date and followed correctly.
- Health and Safety: Assisting with health and safety checks, including evacuation drills, to ensure the laboratory environment is safe for all staff and students.
- Training and Mentoring: The technician will train postgraduate students and new technicians in laboratory techniques, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
- General Housekeeping: Monitoring temperatures of equipment, maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment, and ensuring that all research activities comply with health and safety standards.
- Academic Participation: The technician is expected to participate in various departmental academic activities, including journal clubs, research updates, lab meetings, quality improvement meetings, and audits.
- Flexibility: The role requires flexibility, as the technician must be prepared to work after hours and on weekends when necessary.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the Research Technician position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Educational Background: A relevant BSc degree in a biomedical field.
- Experience: A minimum of two years of work experience in a biomedical research laboratory.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in working with human samples, general molecular biology techniques (including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, sequencing, and sequence analysis), and tissue culture techniques.
- Computer Literacy: Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following qualifications and experiences will be advantageous:
- Experience in working within an academic or research institution.
- Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and regulatory requirements.
- A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
