Assistant Chef Job Purpose
The Assistant Chef will oversee kitchen operations within the Student Centre Cafeteria and Coffee Shop. The role involves assisting the Head Chef in managing kitchen activities, ensuring high-quality food standards, and maintaining smooth day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Chef
1. Quality Control and Catering Excellence
- Supervise the preparation and serving of food.
- Ensure food quality meets high standards of taste and hygiene.
- Oversee portion control to prevent wastage.
- Maintain clean and organized kitchen and cafeteria spaces.
- Inspect kitchen appliances and refrigerators to ensure proper functioning and hygiene.
- Ensure that food is presented tastefully and safely.
- Supervise the staff’s appearance and hygiene.
2. Administrative Duties
- Handle daily and weekly stock orders with the Head Chef and Administrative Assistant.
- Manage stock transfers, receiving, and issuing supplies.
- Conduct monthly inventory counts and control food supplies.
- Ensure efficient stock management using the university’s stock control system.
- Make menu adjustments when required by the Head Chef.
- Oversee the writing-off of spoiled food to maintain financial efficiency.
3. Liaison and Communication
- Internal Liaison: Work with students, the Head Chef, colleagues, and other departments.
- External Liaison: Communicate with the public to provide a good dining experience.
- Uphold values of integrity, accountability, and dedication.
4. Staff Training and Management
- Provide in-service training to staff.
- Motivate team members to increase productivity.
- Manage shift schedules and leave arrangements.
- Maintain discipline and resolve conflicts to ensure a harmonious work environment.

- Attend training courses to stay updated with culinary trends.
- Stay informed about university expansions and developments.

Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this Assistant Chef job opportunity at North-West University, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification (NQF Level 4).
- At least 2 years of experience in stock control, food preparation, and cooking in a medium to large-sized kitchen.
