Requirements
- Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Experience: Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognized foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognized foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Inherent requirement of the job: The successful candidate will be required to engage in the remunerated commuted overtime system and participate in the after-hours call system.
- Participation in the termination of pregnancy services.
- Valid (Code B/EB) driver’s license, willingness, and ability to travel.
- Competencies (knowledge/skills): A proven ability to perform basic gynaecological and obstetric ultrasounds is needed.
- The candidate must have an excellent track record of clinical, research and educational skills.
- Clinical experience with highrisk obstetrics, gynaecological surgery, and ultrasound is required.
- The ability to achieve and maintain good interpersonal relations with staff, patients, and their families is essential.
- Clinical notes and referral writing skills must be of a high standard.
- Verbal and written communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills must be exemplary.
- Experience with teamwork, planning, organisation and co-ordination of the safe management of a labour ward is indispensable.
- Computer literacy in the use of MS Word and Excel, as well as the ability to use online resources, is required.
Duties
- Ensure the delivery of a safe, efficient, patient-centred, high-quality and costeffective clinical service that addresses the burden of disease within the Rural West Health Ecosystem by providing comprehensive specialist obstetric and gynaecological services, including the independent and safe performance of major and minor gynaecological surgical procedures.
- Managing high-risk obstetric patients and specialist gynaecology outpatient clinics, ensuring evidence-based assessment, appropriate management, and continuity of care.
- Performing and supervising complex obstetric procedures, including assisted vaginal deliveries, breech deliveries, postpartum sterilisations, and complicated caesarean sections.
- Performing and interpreting obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations and providing clinical supervision and training to junior medical staff in ultrasound practice.
- Providing clinical leadership, supervision, teaching, mentoring and skills development to medical officers, registrars, interns, and other healthcare professionals to promote high standards of clinical practice. -Ensuring the maintenance of accurate, comprehensive and high-quality clinical records in accordance with legal, ethical and departmental requirements.
- Complying with all applicable administrative policies, legislation, protocols and prescripts of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
- Promoting effective and efficient utilisation of human, financial and material resources to support sound financial management and service sustainability.
- Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, in-service training, continuous professional development, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contributing to the development, review and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Participating in specialist outreach services to district hospitals within the Rural West Health Ecosystem to strengthen service delivery, clinical support and capacity building.
- Participating fully in the provision of termination of pregnancy services in accordance with applicable legislation, ethical standards and departmental policies.
