    Key Responsibilities of the Psychologist Position

    The primary function of the psychologist in this role is to provide comprehensive psychological support and services to UJ students. Below are the key duties:

    1. Provision of Therapeutic Services

    You will be responsible for providing psychotherapeutic support to students, both online and in-person. This includes conducting psychological screenings, assessments, diagnosis, and case formulation. You will also develop and implement psychotherapeutic protocols within PsyCaD. Supporting students with disabilities and ensuring compliance with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) professional development standards will also be part of your duties.

    2. Provision of Crisis Interventions

    Crisis intervention and short-term trauma support will be a key part of your role. This includes providing support during office hours and after hours. You will also play a crucial role in improving and refining crisis intervention protocols across UJ’s multiple campuses.

    3. Career Development and Assessments

    In addition to therapeutic services, you will assist students in preparing for the workforce by providing career assessments and guidance. You will also conduct subject choice assessments and interventions.

    4. Student Development and Liaison

    You will facilitate workshops aimed at student development across various campuses, including residences. Your role will involve liaising with different departments on campus to ensure professional service delivery and making inter-faculty referrals.

    5. Professional Administration

    The psychologist will also be responsible for handling daily administrative tasks such as diary management, professional record-keeping, report writing, and general inquiries. You will attend various professional development activities as required.

    6. Community Engagement, Research, and Liaison

    You will participate in community engagement projects and research initiatives aimed at enhancing student well-being and mental health support. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders will be key to ensuring the continued success of the Centre for Psychological Services.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be considered for this role, you must meet the following qualifications and experience:

    • A Master’s degree in Clinical, Educational, or Counselling Psychology.
    • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical, Educational, or Counselling Psychologist.
    • A minimum of three years of experience in providing psychotherapy, psychometric assessments, and crisis interventions.
    • Experience in the development and delivery of psycho-educative interventions, including group work.
    • Knowledge of current psychological theory, crisis intervention strategies, and best practices in student mental health.

    Key Competencies

    • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office/365 and relevant software.
    • Expertise in facilitating workshops and support groups.
    • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
    • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and relevant policies.
    • A flexible work ethic, able to adjust to evening and weekend hours as required.

    Preferred Recommendations

    While not mandatory, the following experience will be advantageous:

    • Experience working in a higher education environment.
    • Familiarity with managing mental health content on social media platforms.
    • Experience in conducting virtual therapy sessions.
    • Experience in marketing administration for psychosocial projects.
