About the General Assistant Role
The General Assistant position is a critical support role within the Facilities Management and Security Services portfolio. The successful candidate will perform semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks, assist with planned and breakdown maintenance, refurbishments, new installations, and carry out preventative maintenance tasks on buildings, systems, equipment, and ancillary areas.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist Artisans and Handyman: Work closely with skilled personnel in performing maintenance and repair tasks on CSIR sites, buildings, plants, and equipment.
- Minor Electrical Works: Perform basic electrical tasks, such as replacing light bulbs and tubes, and conducting preventative maintenance inspections.
- Electrical Tasks Under Supervision: Assist with more complex electrical tasks, such as installing and replacing light fittings, electrical plugs, and wiring under the supervision of an Artisan.
- Air Conditioning Maintenance: Conduct basic air conditioning maintenance, including cleaning filters and outdoor units.
- Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Tasks: Assist with the installation and replacement of air conditioners, re-gassing, and general repairs under the supervision of an Artisan.
- General Building Maintenance: Perform various building maintenance tasks, including painting, flooring, furniture repair, mounting whiteboards and pictures, and maintaining door systems and locks.
- General Facilities Duties: Engage in general housekeeping in work areas, cleaning work sites, maintaining vehicles used by the section, and attending to contractors and other personnel visiting the site.
- Additional General Duties: Assist with setting up temporary structures such as scaffolding, placing warning signs, and fulfilling minor requests from clients as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Equipment Handling: Operate various equipment, including drills and grinders, and use power tools and machinery as needed.
- Safety and Reporting: Ensure a safe work environment by reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions promptly.
Requirements
To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Requirement: A Grade 12 certificate.
- Experience: At least two years of experience in a technical or maintenance environment.
- Technical Knowledge: A solid understanding of maintenance and facilities management.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) regulations and statutory compliance in a workshop environment.
- Driver’s License: A valid Code 8 driver’s license with a medical clearance certificate.
