Requirements

  • Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Practitioner.
  • Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner.
  • Experience: Grade 1: None after registration as a Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA in respect of SA qualified employees.
  • 1-year relevant experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, who are not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner in respect of SA qualified employees.
  • A minimum of 6 years relevant experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner with a recognised foreign Health Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner in respect of SA qualified employees.
  • A minimum of 11 years relevant experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
  • Inherent requirements of the job: Applicants must have a valid APLS/ PALS certificate.
  • Willingness to travel within the District and Metro Region.
  • Competencies (knowledge/skills): Ability to comprehensively manage all paediatric cases including child protection cases and management of tertiary level patients.
  • Proven leadership abilities.
  • Experience in supervision of staff and students.
  • Experience and effective management of allocated resources.
  • Proven experience in teamwork.
  • Proven knowledge/skills and experience in principles of service planning, organising, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Proven ability to adhere to all departmental requirements and protocols.
  • Proven knowledge of public health and public health policies, guidelines and related prescript to manage resources effectively.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • Experience in general paediatrics post community service, including acute and chronic care.
  • Willingness to develop protocols, attend meetings and prepare reports for child abuse and child protection.
  • Willingness to work with the trauma unit, acute care and OPD on child abuse issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain a high standard of professionalism.
  • Ability and willingness to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Knowledge of protocols for common acute and long-term health conditions.
  • Valid Advanced Paediatric Life Support course.

Duties

  • Provide comprehensive, high-quality ambulatory, emergency, child protection and general paediatrics clinical services, with an emphasis on child protection and long-term health conditions.
  • Teaching (formal and informal) and training in General Paediatrics (undergraduate, postgraduate, nursing, and allied health).
  • Create a learning environment for students and junior colleagues.
  • Do appropriate clinical audits and research within the department to stay abreast of clinical developments.
  • Participation in existing research projects within the department and stay abreast of clinical developments.
  • Alignment with clinical & corporate governance principles of General Paediatrics.
  • Administration of HECTIS patient management system and other WCG health applications.
