Requirements
- Grade 12/Matric Certificate.
- MBCHB.
- FC Psych / MMed (Psychiatry) or equivalent qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in Psychiatry.
- Current registration with HPCSA.
- Grade 1: no experience after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a recognised Specialty, Grade 2: a minimum of 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA in Psychiatry and Grade 3 a minimum of 10 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a Psychiatry.
- Sound knowledge and skills associated with the practice of Psychiatry.
- Ability to diagnose and manage common medical problems including emergencies.
- Good communication, leadership, interpersonal and decision-making qualities.
- Knowledge of current Health Legislation and policies as it relates to Public Institutions.
Duties
- This is a position which is jointly appointed with the University of the Witwatersrand and therefore incorporates academic and research duties as well as service provision and administrative obligations.
- Support and implement community psychiatry and integrated primary mental health care in the Sedibeng Health District.
- Provide community-based specialist psychiatric care, treatment, and rehabilitation as part of the community psychiatry team.
- Provide academic teaching and supervision to the Psychiatric Registrars and Medical Officers in the district psychiatric clinics.
- Provide in-service training and clinical support to the district Family Physicians and primary health care practitioners towards the provision of integrated mental health care.
- Collaborate with non-health sectors within the district regarding the recognition and care of people with mental illness.
- Participate in community level mental health outreach education and awareness activities.
- Promote and conduct research in the fields of community psychiatry and integrated primary mental health care.
- This includes supervision of Master’s Research Reports by Psychiatric Registrars, participation in collaborative projects and own research studies.
