The University of Pretoria (UP) is offering an exciting opportunity for the position of Director: Employee Relations. This role is pivotal in guiding workplace relationship management and ensuring compliance with labor legislation, while promoting a harmonious work environment.


    Employee Relations Director Job Overview

    • Department: Employee Relations (ER), Directorate of Human Resources & Transformation (HR&T)
    • Post Level: 05

    • Location: Pretoria Campus
    • Type of Position: Permanent

    Role Purpose of the Employee Relations Director

    As the Director: Employee Relations, you will provide strategic leadership in managing workplace relationships at the University. The role involves facilitating employee representation, overseeing disciplinary and grievance processes, and providing institutional support for a broad spectrum of employment relations activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Promoting Sound Labor Relations:
      • Foster a positive work environment by aligning HR policies with labor legislation.
      • Provide advisory services to employees and management on labor laws and policies.
      • Reduce labor disputes through proactive measures.
    2. Dispute Management:
      • Administer effective case management for all disciplinary and grievance issues.
      • Represent the University in CCMA cases (conciliation and arbitration).
      • Facilitate internal dispute resolution and manage labor court cases.
    3. Policy Development and Compliance:
      • Develop and implement Employee Relations plans aligned with the HR Strategic Plan.
      • Ensure the University complies with all labor legislation and collective agreements.
    4. Leadership in Negotiations:
      • Participate in annual salary negotiations as part of the bargaining team.
      • Support the Chief Negotiator during union meetings and other key discussions.
    5. Training and Capacity Building:
      • Conduct labor relations training to enhance awareness among staff.
      • Monitor and evaluate Employee Relations policies to ensure their effectiveness.
    6. Governance and Quality Assurance:
      • Ensure proper governance of the Employee Relations Directorate.
      • Manage the human and financial resources of the Directorate effectively.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be considered for this role, you must meet the following requirements:

    • Education:
      • NQF Level 9 (Master’s Degree) in Labour Relations, Industrial Relations, or Law (LLM).
      • Registration with the Legal Practice Council (LPC).
    • Experience:
      • At least 5 years of management experience in a labor relations environment.
      • Comprehensive knowledge of South African labor laws, collective bargaining processes, and conflict resolution.
    • Skills:
      • Expertise in dispute resolution and alignment of HR policies with labor laws.
      • Ability to interpret policies governing conditions of employment accurately.

    Critical Competencies

    • Proficiency in South African labor legislation.
    • Strong leadership and negotiation skills.
    • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
    • Adept at case management and dispute prevention.
    • Strategic thinking in aligning employee relations with organizational goals.
