    The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is hiring for an Environmental Officer Control Grade A: Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) position based in Cape Town. This is your chance to be part of a team dedicated to sustainable development and environmental conservation.

    Environmental Officer Control Overview

    • Position Title: Environmental Officer Control Grade A: MPAs (OC06/2025)
    • Salary: R612 480 per annum
    • Location: Cape Town, Western Cape
    • Closing Date for Applications: 19 May 2025

    Key Responsibilities

    If you are successful, your daily duties will include:

    • Expanding the MPA Network: Design and grow the network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including deep-water and high-seas areas.
    • Conservation Planning: Play a key role in conservation planning processes.
    • Policy Development: Develop and implement policies and legislation concerning MPAs and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs).
    • Biodiversity Monitoring: Prepare reports based on the National Biodiversity Monitoring Framework.
    • Stakeholder Engagement: Build partnerships with public and private sectors and lead consultations on potential expansion areas for conservation.
    • Operational Management: Develop and oversee the implementation of management plans for MPAs.
    • International Compliance: Help South Africa meet its international conservation obligations.
    • Administrative Duties: Handle contracts, manage budgets, and ensure good governance practices.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • A 4-year Honours Degree (NQF 8) in Natural or Environmental Management/Sciences or an equivalent qualification.
    • Six years of relevant post-qualification experience.
    • Knowledge of:
      • Policy development and legislation (NPAES, Biodiversity Act, Protected Areas Act, etc.)
      • MPA management, socio-economic issues, conservation planning, compliance and enforcement measures.
      • Public finance, procurement, and budget management (PFMA, NT Regulations).
    • Skills Required:
      • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
      • Leadership and conflict management.
      • Computer literacy and project management expertise.
    • Other Requirements:
      • Valid driver’s license (Code B).
      • Willingness to travel extensively.

    • Applications must be submitted on a signed Z83 form (available from any Public Service Department) along with a detailed CV.
    • Certified copies of qualifications, ID, Senior Certificate, and driver’s license will only be needed if you are shortlisted.
    • Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA.
    • Shortlisted candidates must also complete the Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme offered by the National School of Government (NSG).
    • The department may perform background and security checks.
