Pursuing a legal career in South Africa can be rewarding, but understanding the salary progression is crucial when considering the long-term financial outlook.

Lawyer Salary Guide: From Candidate Attorney to Senior Counsel

This guide breaks down typical earnings at each stage of a legal professional’s career — from a candidate attorney to senior counsel.

    1. Candidate Attorney (CA)

    Overview:
A candidate attorney is a law graduate undergoing practical legal training before being admitted as an attorney. This period usually lasts two years unless shortened by attending a School for Legal Practice.

    Salary Range (Monthly):
    R5,000 – R12,000

    Factors Influencing Salary:

    • Location: Firms in major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town tend to offer higher stipends.
    • Firm Size: Larger, commercial law firms typically pay more than small practices.
    • Academic Performance: Top-performing graduates from leading universities may negotiate higher stipends.

Although modest, this stipend is considered part of a training phase rather than full employment.

    2. Admitted Attorney

    Overview:
After completing articles and passing the board exams, a CA becomes an admitted attorney. Entry-level attorneys may work for law firms, government, corporates, or practice independently.

    Salary Range (Monthly):
    R15,000 – R35,000 (entry-level)
    R35,000 – R80,000+ (experienced)

    Factors Influencing Salary:

    • Specialisation: Fields like commercial law, mergers & acquisitions, and intellectual property often attract higher salaries.
    • Firm Type: Salaries are higher in “Big Five” firms and multinational practices.
    • Experience: With more years of practice, attorneys can earn significantly more, especially in niche or in-demand areas.

Attorneys may also branch out as consultants or legal advisors, depending on their goals and experience.

    3. Associate and Senior Associate (Law Firm Track)

    Overview:
In large firms, career progression often moves from junior associate to senior associate before partnership. Associates typically manage cases and provide strategic legal advice under the guidance of partners.

    Salary Range (Monthly):
    R30,000 – R60,000 (associate)
    R60,000 – R100,000+ (senior associate)

Growth Opportunities: Promotion to senior associate and eventually partner is performance-based, influenced by client acquisition, billable hours, and expertise.

    4. Partner (Equity and Non-Equity)

    Overview:
Partners are senior lawyers who often hold ownership stakes in the firm (equity partners) or manage substantial portfolios (non-equity partners).

    Salary Range (Monthly):
    R80,000 – R250,000+
(Salaries may vary dramatically depending on firm profits, structure, and individual performance.)

    Key Considerations:

    • Equity partners share in the firm’s profits and may earn millions annually.
    • Non-equity partners receive high fixed salaries but don’t share directly in profits.

    5. Advocate and Junior Counsel

    Overview:
Advocates are litigation specialists who appear in court. After completing pupillage, they may join a Bar and practice independently or as part of a group of advocates.

    Salary Range (Annual):
    R300,000 – R600,000+ (junior advocate/counsel)
(Income depends on briefs, performance, and volume of work.)

    Income Model:
Advocates are usually self-employed and are paid per case, so income can fluctuate.

    6. Senior Counsel (SC / “Silks”)

    Overview:
Senior Counsel, often referred to as “silks,” are seasoned advocates recognised for their expertise and leadership. Appointment as an SC is made by the President on recommendation from the Bar Council.

    Salary Range (Annual):
    R1 million – R5 million+

    Notable Points:

    • Senior Counsel often handle high-profile, complex cases.
    • Their rates are significantly higher due to experience and status.

    Additional Notes:

    • In-House Counsel: Legal advisors in corporations can earn from R40,000 to R150,000+ monthly depending on the industry and seniority.
    • Government Lawyers: State attorneys and prosecutors earn between R20,000 and R70,000+ monthly, depending on rank and experience.
    • Academic and NGO Sector: Legal professionals in academia or NGOs typically earn less but may find satisfaction in public interest work.

Salaries in the legal profession vary widely based on experience, location, firm type, and area of expertise. While entry-level pay is modest, the legal career path offers significant financial growth, especially for those who specialise, perform well, and aim for senior positions like partnership or Senior Counsel. For aspiring lawyers, understanding this trajectory is essential for setting realistic expectations and career goals.
