    The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has officially opened applications for National Senior Certificate Marking Officials for the 2025 November National Senior Certificate, the 2026 June National Senior Certificate, and the 2026 June Senior Certificate examinations.


    This is a valuable opportunity for school-based and office-based educators to contribute to the examination process by ensuring fair and accurate assessment of learners’ performances. Marking officials play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the examination system while gaining professional development experience.

    Who Should Apply?

    Applications are open to all educators currently employed in schools or administrative educational offices who meet the necessary qualifications and experience requirements.

    Eligible applicants may apply for the following positions:

    • Chief Markers – Oversee and manage the marking of a particular subject.
    • Internal Moderators – Ensure that marking is done consistently and fairly across all scripts.
    • Deputy Chief Markers – Assist chief markers and support the marking process.
    • Senior Markers – Provide additional oversight and guidance to markers.
    • Markers – Responsible for marking candidates’ examination scripts.

    What Are the Requirements?

    To qualify for any of the NSC marking official positions, applicants must meet the following general criteria:

    Must be a qualified and experienced educator in the subject applied for.
    Must have teaching and assessment experience in the respective subject.
    Should be knowledgeable about the National Senior Certificate examination requirements.
    Must have a good track record of professionalism, reliability, and efficiency in educational settings.
    Prior marking experience is an advantage, especially for senior roles like Chief Marker, Internal Moderator, and Deputy Chief Marker.

    Roles and Responsibilities of Marking Officials

    Each National Senior Certificate marking official plays an essential role in ensuring that examinations are marked fairly, accurately, and efficiently. Here is a brief overview of the responsibilities for each position:

    Chief Marker

    • Provides overall leadership for the marking process of a subject.
    • Ensures that marking adheres to national standards.
    • Works closely with internal moderators and senior markers to maintain consistency.

    Internal Moderator

    • Reviews marked scripts to ensure fairness and accuracy.
    • Works with the Chief Marker to address discrepancies in marking.
    • Ensures that marking guidelines are correctly applied.

    Deputy Chief Marker

    • Assists the Chief Marker in managing the marking process.
    • Helps resolve any challenges that arise during the marking process.
    • Provides support to senior markers and markers.

    Senior Marker

    • Assists in moderating the work of markers.
    • Ensures that marking is done according to the agreed-upon standards.

    Marker

    • Marks scripts according to the provided marking guidelines.
    • Ensures accuracy and fairness in marking candidates’ work.
    • Works under the supervision of senior markers and moderators.

    How to Apply for National Senior Certificate Marking Officials Positions

    The marker application system is available online at https://exams.westerncape.gov.za/markers and will be open from 3 February 2025 to 8 April 2025.

      • Go to https://exams.westerncape.gov.za/markers.
      • Ensure you have a stable internet connection before starting your application.

      • Go through the Procedure Manual for Users of the Online Marker System to understand the system requirements.
    3. Complete the Application Form
      • Fill in personal details such as your name, contact details, and professional experience.
