Purpose of the Position
The Residence Officer is responsible for the effective operation of the residence, which includes maintaining the buildings, supervising staff, monitoring safety, and assisting students with residence-related issues. As the primary manager for Over de Voor residence, you will ensure the property remains functional, safe, and welcoming for all residents.
Key Responsibilities
As a Residence Officer, you will have several vital duties. Here’s a breakdown of what’s expected:
1. Supervision of Cleaning Staff
- Ensure that cleaning duties are completed in alignment with agreements.
- Oversee the work quality of cleaning personnel, ensuring high standards of hygiene and cleanliness.
2. Maintenance of Equipment and Buildings
- Conduct regular inspections to identify necessary repairs or defects.
- Oversee repair work and ensure all maintenance meets the residence’s standards.
- Monitor and update maintenance rosters, including checks on distribution boards, alarms, roofs, gutters, taps, and water tanks.
3. Operation of the Residence
- Maintain the residence’s general tidiness and hygiene.
- Be knowledgeable about and enforce the rules, policies, and procedures of Residence and Catering Services.
- Complete administrative tasks, including corridor lists, cancellations, and room inventory forms.
- Manage annual stock-taking and ensure proper inventory control.
- Implement measures to reduce power and water consumption.
4. Assistance to Supervisors and Students
- Be accessible to students with residence-related issues.
- Perform informal inspections and attend residence management meetings.
- Assist with operational issues that may arise in neighboring residences.
5. Personal Development
- Participate in relevant training and development programs.
6. Ad Hoc Duties
- Manage guest accommodation for holiday periods.
Essential Competencies and Skills
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following skills and competencies:
Technical Skills
- Computer Proficiency: Familiarity with Excel, Word, email systems, and internet usage.
- Organizational Abilities: Strong administrative and organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities.
- Communication Skills: Proficiency in both Afrikaans and English, with strong verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4).
- Experience: At least two years in staff or contractor management and at least two years of experience in equipment and building maintenance.
