    Are you passionate about promoting sports and recreational activities in schools? The Western Cape Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is offering a rewarding opportunity for individuals eager to make a positive impact on school sport development. There are currently three positions open for the role of Sport Promotion Officer: School Sport, on a three-year contract basis in West Coast, Central Karoo, and at Head Office. This opportunity is open to applicants with a background in sports promotion, project management, and event coordination.


    Sport Promotion Officer Job Overview

    • Position Title: Sport Promotion Officer: School Sport (3-Year Contract)

    • Salary: R308,154 per annum plus a 37% allowance in lieu of benefits (Salary Level 7)

    Sport Promotion Officer Job Purpose

    The Western Cape Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport aims to foster a culture of participation in sports and recreational activities across schools in the province. As a Sport Promotion Officer, you will coordinate and implement various sports development programmes and activities that encourage youth participation and skill development through sport.

    Minimum Requirements

    To qualify for this role, candidates must have:

    • A 3-year National Diploma or B-Degree (or an equivalent higher qualification).
    • A valid Code B (or higher) driving license.

    Note: Individuals with disabilities that restrict driving but who have access to reliable transportation are encouraged to apply.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience

    It is advantageous for applicants to have:

    • Experience in recreation programmes and an understanding of indigenous games.
    • Project management and event planning experience.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Sport Promotion Officer, you will play a pivotal role in coordinating sports activities and managing sports development centres. The main duties include:

    • Implementing Recreation Development Programmes: Assist in establishing programmes aimed at encouraging mass participation in school sports.
    • Managing Recreation and Sports Development Centres: Oversee various sport development centres, ensuring smooth operations and maintenance of assets.
    • Providing Support and Mentorship: Guide and support staff involved in the recreation programmes, ensuring adherence to governance and operational standards.
    • Evaluating Programme Impact: Regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of sports programmes and make adjustments as necessary.

    Core Competencies

    Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Understanding of Mass Participation Strategies and the National Sport and Recreation Plan.
    • Familiarity with the Public Finance Management Act, Budget Processes, and Basic Human Resource Management.
    • Awareness of key programmes such as the MOD Programme and Neighbouring School Programme, and the ability to foster community partnerships through sports.
    • Event and Project Management Skills, including marketing events and managing information effectively.

    Remuneration and Benefits

    This role offers an annual remuneration of R308,154, along with a 37% allowance in lieu of benefits. Eligible employees may also access benefits for medical aid, housing assistance, and pension contributions as per the department’s policies.
