Park Ranger Job Description
As a Park Ranger, you will be tasked with developing, implementing, and overseeing policies, procedures, and legislative requirements that provide environmental protection services and natural resource management. This role aims to sustain specific species in protected areas like bird sanctuaries, nature reserves, and the zoo farm, while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and bylaws.
Key Performance Areas
1. Protecting Natural Areas
- Patrol designated areas to identify and intervene in illegal activities such as the removal of flora and fauna, illegal dumping, and squatting.
- Enforce environmental laws and bylaws in collaboration with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).
2. Community Engagement
- Attend safety and crime sector meetings to discuss security concerns affecting JCPZ’s jurisdiction.
- Conduct community education programs on conservation and safety, visiting schools and institutions to promote awareness.
3. Reporting and Compliance
- Provide daily reports on patrols, complaints, and the status of designated areas.
- Escalate unresolved issues to superiors and work with JMPD to address legal breaches.
4. Emergency Response
- Participate in search-and-rescue missions, conservation efforts, fire management, and other law enforcement activities relevant to park safety.
Minimum Job Requirements
To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Educational Qualifications:
- Certificate in Natural Sciences or related fields.
- National Diploma in Nature Conservation, Wildlife Management, Game Ranch Management, or Degree in Environmental Management.
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in law enforcement within a conservation environment.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in conservation and patrolling.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid Code C1/Public Driver’s License.
