Achieving a Record-Breaking 82.9% Pass Rate: Matric Results Class of 2023

Matric results 2024. In a triumph of resilience and determination, the Matric Class of 2023 in South Africa has defied numerous challenges to achieve an impressive 82.9% pass rate, marking a 2.8 percentage point increase from the previous year. The Department of Basic Education recently released the final National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, showcasing the remarkable accomplishments of the students despite the hurdles they faced.

Minister’s Recognition: Commending the Most Resilient Cohort

Addressing the nation about Matric Results on January 18, 2024, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga commended the 2023 cohort as the most resilient yet, navigating through obstacles such as load shedding and the continued impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. This commendation resonates as the class overcame unprecedented challenges, proving their tenacity and commitment to their education.

Upholding a Decade-Long Trend: NSC Pass Rate Surpasses 80%

Over the past decade, the NSC pass rate has steadily climbed from 60% in 2009 to surpass 80%, with the matric class of 2023 maintaining this upward trend despite facing astronomical challenges, according to Minister Motshekga. The 82.9% pass rate is not only a testament to the students’ dedication but also marks the highest achievement since the dawn of democracy.

Striving Through Adversity: Matric Class of 2023 – Achievements

Breaking down the achievements of the 2023 matric class, 40.9% secured a bachelor’s pass, 27.2% attained a diploma pass, and 14.8% achieved a higher certificate pass. This remarkable performance is even more commendable considering the significant disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which began affecting the students in their grade 9 year in 2020.

Behind the Scenes: The Scale of Matric Examinations Class of 2023

Minister Motshekga provided insights into the scale of the matric examinations, highlighting the enormity of the task. A total of 897,000 candidates participated, facing 162 question papers, with more than 10.4 million question papers printed. The logistics involved 72,000 invigilators placed across the country and 52,000 markers to assess the exams. Notably, there were fewer participants in 2023 (897,000) than in the previous year (920,000).

    Provincial Progress: A Nationwide Improvement

Motshekga further detailed the provincial improvements, including progressed learners, with impressive results across the country:

    • Free State: 89%
    • KwaZulu-Natal: 86.4%
    • Gauteng: 85.4%
    • North West: 81.6%
    • Western Cape: 81.5%
    • Eastern Cape: 81.4%
    • Limpopo: 79.5%
    • Mpumalanga: 77%
    • Northern Cape: 75.8%

2023 NSC Exam Results Technical Report

The Class of 2023 achieved the highest performance since the National Senior Certificate examinations began in 2008, despite challenges like rotational attendance and learning losses due to COVID-19. This cohort’s success demonstrates the resilience and maturation of the schooling system, which is evidently on the rise. Key improvements align with the six social justice principles: access, redress, equity, quality, efficiency, and inclusivity.

    Highlights include:

    • An increase in overall performance from 80.1% in 2022 to 82.9% in 2023.
    • 73.3% of districts (55 out of 70) achieved over 80% performance.
    • A significant rise in the Mathematics pass rate from 55.0% in 2022 to 63.5% in 2023.
    • Notable improvements in subjects like Accounting, Economics, Business Studies, Geography, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences.
    • A decrease in schools performing at 0% – 19.9%, with only 15 schools in this range in 2023, compared to 19 in 2022.
    • An increase in learners with special educational needs enrolling for Grade 12 exams, from 2,489 in 2022 to 5,458 in 2023.

Areas for improvement identified by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) include:

    • Addressing the practice of some principals limiting Grade 12 learners from writing a full set of subjects based on preliminary exam performance.
    • Improving examination administration, specifically addressing printing errors in question papers.
    • Ensuring closer monitoring of Provincial Education Departments (PEDs) to guide learners in selecting subjects that align with their career plans and the economy’s needs.
    • Enhancing the quality of passes across all subjects to enable more learners to achieve higher levels and qualify for advanced, relevant fields of study.
