    Application Requirements

    • Qualifications:
      • Three-year career-related tertiary qualification in Nursing Science (degree or national diploma)
      • Diploma in Primary Healthcare or completion of relevant short courses is advantageous
    • Registration:
      • Registered nurse with the South African Nursing Council
      • Possession of a current South African Nursing Council receipt
    • Experience:
      • At least three years’ relevant experience in primary healthcare
      • Supervisory experience is an advantage
    • Skills:
      • Computer literacy
      • Willingness and ability to work shifts
      • Flexibility to be placed anywhere in the city as required

    Job Purpose

    The primary aim of the Community Health Nurse positions is to provide comprehensive primary healthcare services to a diverse range of patients. This includes working in mobile clinics, healthcare facilities, and within local communities to ensure that healthcare is accessible to all, especially those in underserved areas. The overarching goal is to promote, preserve, and enhance community health through various healthcare initiatives and programs.

    Below is a detailed breakdown of the job purpose and the key responsibilities that come with this role:

    • Preventive Care: Administering vaccinations, conducting health screenings, and providing education on disease prevention.
    • Curative Care: Diagnosing and treating common illnesses and injuries, prescribing medications, and managing chronic conditions.
    • Rehabilitative Care: Offering support and resources for recovery and rehabilitation, particularly for patients recovering from surgeries or managing long-term health issues.
    • Palliative Care: Providing compassionate care and support for patients with serious illnesses, aiming to improve their quality of life.
    • Health Workshops: Organizing and conducting workshops on topics such as nutrition, exercise, mental health, and chronic disease management.
    • Community Outreach: Visiting homes, schools, and community centers to provide health education and resources.
    • Counseling Services: Offering one-on-one counseling to patients on health-related issues, lifestyle changes, and managing health conditions.
    • Community Assessments: Conducting surveys and assessments to identify the health needs of the community and tailor services accordingly.
    • Building Relationships: Establishing strong relationships with community leaders and members to foster collaboration and support for health initiatives.
    • Advocacy: Advocating for the health needs of the community to local government and healthcare organizations to ensure that resources and services are adequately provided.
    • Coordination of Services: Scheduling and coordinating healthcare services at clinics and mobile units to ensure efficient service delivery.
    • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and confidential patient records, including medical histories, treatment plans, and progress notes.
    • Resource Management: Ensuring that medical supplies and equipment are available and properly maintained for patient care.
    • First Aid and Emergency Care: Providing immediate medical attention in emergencies, such as accidents or sudden illnesses.
    • Disaster Response: Participating in disaster response efforts, including providing medical care and support during natural disasters or disease outbreaks.
    • Public Health Surveillance: Monitoring and reporting on public health issues, such as infectious disease outbreaks, to help control and prevent the spread of illness.
    • Multidisciplinary Teams: Working with doctors, social workers, nutritionists, and other healthcare providers to deliver holistic care.
    • Referrals and Follow-Ups: Referring patients to specialized care when necessary and following up to ensure they receive the appropriate treatment.
    • Community Health Programs: Participating in and contributing to community health programs and initiatives aimed at improving overall public health.
