The Congress of South African Trade Unions is the largest trade union federation in South Africa. Since its formation in 1985, COSATU has played a vital role in advancing workers’ rights and influencing national labour and economic policies. This guide explores the purpose, the sectors it represents, and how workers can become part of the federation.

    What Is COSATU?

COSATU is a national federation of trade unions committed to advocating for workers’ rights, decent wages, safe working conditions, and social justice. It has a strong history of activism, including involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle. COSATU operates with the belief that workers, when organised, have the power to bring about economic and social transformation.

This Union is one of the three members of the Tripartite Alliance, along with:

    • The African National Congress (ANC) (ruling political party),
    • The South African Communist Party (SACP).

    What Does COSATU Do?

This Union engages in various functions and activities on behalf of its affiliated unions and their members:

    1. Advocacy and Representation

    • Represents workers in national policy forums such as the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC).
    • Influences government policies on labour, economic justice, health, education, and social services.

    2. Support for Union Members

    • Assists in resolving workplace disputes.
    • Provides legal support and training for union shop stewards.
    • Organises strike actions and campaigns when negotiations fail.

    3. Campaigning

    • Runs campaigns on living wages, gender equality, public healthcare, and workers’ rights.
    • Mobilises against unfair labour practices and retrenchments.

    4. Education and Training

    • Offers education on labour law, collective bargaining, and worker rights.
    • Conducts workshops to empower union leaders and members.

    Who Does COSATU Represent?

This Union represents over 1.6 million workers across a wide range of industries. It is an umbrella body made up of affiliated trade unions that span both public and private sectors.

Some Key COSATU Affiliated Unions Include:

    How to Join

    Step 1: Join a COSATU-Affiliated Union

This Union itself is a federation; individual workers cannot join it directly. Instead, you must become a member of a COSATU-affiliated union in your sector.

Step 2: Contact the Relevant Union

    • Identify the union that represents your job or industry.
    • Visit their official website or office.
    • Submit a membership application (often requires ID copy, payslip, and personal details).

Step 3: Pay Monthly Union Dues

    • Members typically pay monthly contributions (a percentage of salary or a fixed fee).
    • These dues fund union operations, legal support, and campaigns.

    Step 4: Participate

    • Once you’re a member, you can vote in union elections, attend meetings, and take part in worker actions.
    • You may also be elected as a shop steward or representative at your workplace.

    • Educational programmes and leadership training.
