    The eThekwini Municipality is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Communications Officer to join their team. This permanent position is vital for ensuring effective communication, public relations, marketing, media liaison, reputation protection, and monitoring within the Municipality. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and implementing communication strategies that enhance the Municipality’s public image and ensure that key messages are effectively delivered to both internal and external audiences.

    Essential Requirements

    To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • Education: Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or any related and equivalent qualification.
    • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
    • License: A valid motor vehicle driving license.
    • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using computers and related software.

    Preferred Requirements

    While not mandatory, the following qualifications are preferred:

    • Education: Degree (NQF Level 7) in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or any related and equivalent qualification.
    • Experience: A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

    Special Conditions

    • The role may require overtime work.
    • The candidate must be physically capable of performing the duties of the post.

    Key Responsibility Areas

    As a Communications Officer, your primary responsibilities will include:

    1. Developing and Implementing Operational Plans:
      • Create annual operational plans for various client units within the Municipality.
      • Ensure that communication strategies align with the Municipality’s broader goals and objectives.
    2. Communication Plan Development:
      • Compile detailed communication plans for specific units, cluster projects, and programs within the Municipality.
      • Tailor messages to resonate with targeted audiences.
    3. Content Creation:
      • Write articles, press releases, features, and opinion pieces for both internal and external publications.
      • Develop compelling content that informs and engages the public while promoting the Municipality’s initiatives.
    4. Advertisement Preparation:
      • Prepare newspaper and electronic advertisements.
      • Ensure that advertisements are educational, informative, and effectively encourage the desired audience response.
    5. Photography and Picture Composition:
      • Select and assemble the necessary equipment for capturing desired photographs.
      • Ensure that all visual content is of high quality and supports the Municipality’s communication goals.
    6. Policy Advisement:
      • Advise line departments on communication policies.
      • Communicate important information that protects and promotes the Municipality’s corporate image.
    7. Communication Material Development:
      • Create brochures, flyers, supplements, advertorials, and other branding materials for Municipal events.
    8. Social Media Management:
      • Manage the eThekwini Municipality’s social media channels, including eThekwini Municipality Television, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
    9. Event Planning and Coordination:
      • Plan and coordinate events and launches for various client units.
      • Ensure that all events are well-organized and effectively communicated to the target audience.
    10. Research:
      • Conduct research to determine the most effective communication messages and media.
      • Use research findings to optimize communication strategies.
    11. Undertake Related Assignments:
      • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Senior Manager.
