The team is seeking a qualified and driven individual to support the University’s financial planning, analysis, and reporting functions.

    Job Title: Financial Cost Controller (Grade 10)

    • Position: Financial Cost Controller
    • Division: Finance Division (0901 – Finance)
    • Location: Rhodes University, Makhanda, Eastern Cape
    • Salary: R330,178 – R448,473 per annum (Cost to Company)
    • Employment Type: Permanent

    Key Responsibilities

    As the Financial Cost Controller, your role will include:

    • Financial Administration: Manage financial activities related to Council Controlled and Council Managed Funds to ensure the smooth operation of the University’s financial processes.
    • Cost Accounting: Apply cost and management accounting principles to track income and expenditure against allocated budgets.
    • Budget Preparation: Assist in the development of departmental budgets and monitor financial performance.
    • Reporting: Produce accurate and timely financial and management reports using Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and International Accounting Standards (IAS).
    • Expenditure Control: Analyse costs, control spending, and provide financial insights to support decision-making within the Finance Division.
    • Support and Analysis: Collaborate with University departments and divisions to ensure sound financial management and cost control across all activities.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    • Education: A relevant National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Financial Accounting or Cost and Management Accounting.
    • Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience, ideally within a computerised cost and management accounting environment where there were multiple demands and tight deadlines. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to:
      • Maintain and analyse accounting transactions in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
      • Use cost and management accounting principles to monitor income and expenditure against budgets.
      • Prepare financial and management reports with supporting analysis.
      • Contribute to the budget preparation process.
      • Proficiently use Microsoft Excel and Word for day-to-day tasks.
      • Experience with ERP systems would be advantageous.

    Key Competencies

    • Strong understanding of financial principles, accounting standards, and best practices.
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word) and familiarity with financial management software (ERP systems experience is an advantage).
    • Teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to work across departments.

    Selection Process

    Remuneration

    • Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R330,178
    • Cost to Company per annum: R448,473

    While this position is advertised as permanent, Rhodes University may opt to appoint on a fixed-term contract of at least three years.
