    High Court Legal Practitioner Job Description

    The High Court Legal Practitioner – Criminal role is a permanent position based at the Mthatha Local Office. The successful candidate will represent indigent accused persons in complex criminal High Court cases, mentor Candidate Attorneys, and contribute to administrative and legal responsibilities within the office.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide legal representation for indigent accused persons in High Court cases.
    • Handle complex criminal matters at the High Court level.
    • Train and supervise Candidate Attorneys to develop future legal talent.
    • Undertake office administration and ensure compliance with organisational standards.
    • Represent vulnerable individuals, including women and children, in criminal matters.

    Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies Required

    To qualify for this exciting opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    Qualifications

    • Admitted Attorney or Advocate (Advocates must have completed pupillage at a recognised institution).
    • Possess an LLB degree.
    • Have a valid driver’s licence (advantageous).

    Experience

    • A minimum of seven years’ post-qualification experience, of which at least five years must be post-admission experience.
    • At least four years of High Court experience or a minimum of six years in Regional Court practice.
    • Proven expertise in handling criminal matters at the High Court level.

    Skills and Attributes

    • Right of appearance in the High Court.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
    • Ability to work effectively as a team player.
    • A commitment to self-development and continuous learning.

    Remuneration Package

    The position offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R884,268.00 (LP-7), reflecting Legal Aid SA’s commitment to attracting top legal talent.
