    About the University of Pretoria

    The University of Pretoria is a renowned institution known for its commitment to quality research and academic excellence, making it one of South Africa’s top research universities. As a Marketing and Communications Officer, you will play a key role in promoting the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme, highlighting its mission to empower young scholars and ensure its successful communication across diverse platforms.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Marketing and Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and executing marketing and communications strategies that support the overall vision of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme. Some of your main duties include:

    1. Developing a Comprehensive Marketing Strategy:
      • Collaborate with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Public Affairs and Communications (PAC) to create a robust marketing and communication plan.
      • Align the plan with the broader objectives of both the Mastercard Foundation and the University of Pretoria’s Department of Institutional Advancement (DIA).
    2. Content Creation and Dissemination:
      • Craft compelling narratives that showcase the transformative impact of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme.
      • Ensure consistent messaging and communication with donors, partners, and staff through diverse channels such as newsletters, social media, and press releases.
    3. Event Promotion:
      • Promote the programme’s events, ensuring the target audience is reached effectively.
      • Work on enhancing community engagement by emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility, especially for underprivileged groups.
    4. Crisis Communication:
      • Develop and implement strategies to manage communication during challenging times, ensuring the programme’s reputation is protected.
    5. Performance Monitoring:
      • Track and monitor key performance metrics related to engagement, reach, and public perception, adjusting strategies when necessary.
      • Collect and manage data from alumni to showcase the long-term impact of the programme.
    6. Brand Strategy:
      • Work on building a brand strategy for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme, ensuring consistency across all messaging, both at the University of Pretoria and the Mastercard Foundation.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Educational Qualification:
      • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
    • Experience:
      • At least five years of professional experience in marketing, communications, or a related field.
    • Other Requirements:
      • A valid driver’s license.

    • Ethical Sensitivity: An understanding of ethical considerations, including sensitivity to cultural diversity.
    • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and engage effectively with stakeholders.
    • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
    • Cultural Competency: Empathy and understanding of working with diverse communities, particularly underprivileged and marginalized groups.

    Candidates with the following experience will have an edge:

    • Non-Profit or Educational Experience: Marketing and communications experience in an educational or non-profit setting.
    • Commitment to Marginalized Communities: A demonstrated commitment to empowering underprivileged groups and youth.
    • African Context Experience: Previous experience working in other African countries and an understanding of youth issues across the continent.
    • Digital and Design Skills: Proficiency in publishing tools such as Microsoft Publisher, Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign.

    Remuneration

    The University of Pretoria offers an all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position, which will be determined based on the incumbent’s level of appointment, following UP policy guidelines.
