    The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) is offering an exciting career opportunity for a Mechanical Artisan to join its Reactor Operations department within the NOAM division. This permanent position, based in North West, South Africa, presents a chance for a skilled professional to contribute to the maintenance and operations of the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor.


    Key Responsibilities and Performance Areas

    The Mechanical Artisan will play a critical role in the maintenance and smooth operation of SAFARI-1’s mechanical systems. Key responsibilities include:

    1. Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs

    • Performing routine maintenance on various mechanical systems, including pumps, fans, motors, valves, compressors, and hand tools.
    • Ensuring reactor components and building structures are in optimal condition.
    • Handling preventive and corrective maintenance as per prescribed schedules.

    2. Planning and Supervision

    • Assisting the Mechanical Section Head in managing the mechanical maintenance workshop and supervising a team of two artisans, one assistant, two students, and approximately 20 contractors.
    • Coordinating maintenance activities, ensuring job cards are completed accurately and on time.

    3. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving

    • Addressing breakdowns and identifying innovative solutions for complex mechanical problems.
    • Ensuring scheduled maintenance activities are efficiently performed during reactor shutdown periods.

    4. Equipment Installation and Modification

    • Overseeing installation, commissioning, and modification of reactor components and equipment.
    • Supporting riggers during the inspection of lifting equipment.

    5. Purchasing and Inventory Control

    • Managing procurement of materials and spare parts for maintenance, upgrades, and modifications.
    • Liaising with suppliers to secure quality equipment at competitive prices.

    6. Safety, Compliance, and Documentation

    • Ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements related to a nuclear environment.
    • Performing routine and statutory inspections of pumps, fans, overhead cranes, and ladders.
    • Keeping detailed documentation and records of completed maintenance work.
    • Preparing work procedures, checklists, and mechanical drawings.

    7. Training and Support

    • Providing training to SAFARI-1 personnel on new and existing equipment.
    • Supporting the Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) management system.
    • Staying updated with industry developments through training sessions, courses, and literature.

    Key Competencies and Required Skills

    To excel in the Mechanical Artisan role, the candidate must demonstrate the following skills and competencies:

    • Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of nuclear facilities, regulatory frameworks, and quality assurance standards.
    • Analytical Thinking: Ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues efficiently.
    • Organizational and Planning Skills: Strong ability to plan, document, and execute maintenance tasks.
    • Communication and Leadership: Excellent interpersonal skills for team coordination and training.
    • Time and Stress Management: Ability to work under pressure, particularly during urgent breakdowns and shutdown maintenance periods.
    • Professionalism and Integrity: High levels of ethics and responsibility, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety regulations.

    Minimum Qualifications and Experience

    Educational Qualifications

    • Must be a Qualified Artisan in the mechanical field.
    • Possess a valid Code 08 driver’s license and own transport.
    • Must be medically fit to qualify as a radiation and chemical worker.

    Experience Requirements

    • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance within a nuclear facility.
    • Hands-on experience in machining and fabrication.
    • Strong knowledge of quality assurance and environmental control systems.
    • Must be computer literate, with the ability to manage maintenance documentation effectively.
