    A pivotal role is now open for application in the Cape Wineland Health District – that of a Pharmacy Supervisor. This critical position enhances the delivery of pharmaceutical services, ensuring that the community has access to essential healthcare services. The role is especially significant as it integrates with the broader mission of the district to maintain a high standard of health services.


    The role of a Pharmacy Supervisor stands as a cornerstone in ensuring the seamless delivery of pharmaceutical services. Within the Cape Wineland Health District, this position holds particular significance, serving as a linchpin in the district’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to its community members.

    Pharmacy Supervisor Vacancy Overview

    • Title: Pharmacy Supervisor (Grade 1)
    • Location: Cape Wineland Health District
    • Salary: R906 540 per annum, (A portion of the package can be structured according to the individual’s personal needs).
    • CENTRE : Worcester Community Day Centre, Breede Valley Sub-district
    • Closing Date: 10 May 2024

    Minimum Requirements

    • Must hold a basic qualification in Pharmacy recognized by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), enabling registration as a Pharmacist.
    • This qualification ensures a robust understanding of pharmacological standards, patient safety, and ethical healthcare practices.
    • Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist is required.
    • Validates professional practice capability and adherence to national health standards.
    • At least 3 years of post-registration experience as a Pharmacist, specific to candidates qualified in South Africa.
    • Experience should include roles involving medication management, patient care, and ideally, supervisory responsibilities.
    • Possession of a valid Code B/EB driver’s license for necessary travel within the Sub-district.
    • Demonstrated willingness to work overtime to meet the demands of the service and ensure continuous patient care.

    Key Competencies

    • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, essential for documentation, data analysis, presentations, and communication.
    • Familiarity with pharmacy management software and electronic health record systems is highly advantageous, enabling efficient management of pharmaceutical data and patient information.
    • Strong capabilities in resource allocation and personnel management, ensuring efficient use of materials and human resources.
    • Experience in strategic planning and execution, capable of leading teams towards achieving organizational goals while fostering a positive work environment.
    • Skills in budget management and cost control are essential for maintaining financial integrity in pharmaceutical operations.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills, crucial for interacting with healthcare professionals, staff, and patients.
    • Ability to handle conflicts skillfully, resolving disputes and facilitating discussions to promote a collaborative team environment.
    • Competence in training and mentoring staff, enhancing team capabilities and encouraging professional growth.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of professionalism and ethics in high-pressure situations, ensuring patient safety and compliance with healthcare regulations.
    • Commitment to continuous professional development, staying updated with the latest pharmaceutical practices and innovations.
    • In-depth understanding of National and Provincial Health Policies, crucial for aligning pharmacy practices with legislative requirements.
    • Thorough knowledge of the Pharmacy Act 53 of 1974 and other relevant regulations, ensuring compliance in all pharmaceutical activities.
    • Familiarity with guidelines related to pharmaceutical care, drug handling, and dispensary operations, maintaining legal and ethical standards.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Financial Oversight:
      • Closely monitor and analyze pharmaceutical expenditures to identify trends, prevent overspending, and ensure optimal use of financial resources.
      • Implement and maintain strict budgetary controls to ensure financial sustainability, including the negotiation of supplier contracts and the regular review of procurement practices.
      • Prepare financial reports and forecasts, providing insight and guidance to senior management to assist in strategic decision-making.
    • Operational Management:
      • Direct and coordinate the daily operations of the Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU), ensuring efficient workflow and patient satisfaction.
      • Manage relationships and processes with Private Providers to streamline service delivery and maintain high standards of care.
      • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the pharmacy department.
    • Quality Assurance:
      • Enforce adherence to national dispensing standards and regulations to ensure safe and effective medication management.
      • Conduct regular audits of pharmaceutical services to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.
      • Improve patient access to medication by optimizing inventory management and enhancing logistic supports, reducing wait times and ensuring drug availability.
    • Human Resources:
      • Manage all aspects of human resources within the pharmacy department, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluations.
      • Address disciplinary issues fairly and legally, with a focus on resolving conflicts and maintaining a productive work environment.
      • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development, encouraging staff to pursue further education and training opportunities.
    • Leadership:
      • Chair the Sub-District Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee, leading discussions on medication policies, therapeutic guidelines, and drug utilization to promote rational drug use.
      • Act as a mentor and role model for pharmacy staff, cultivating leadership skills within the team and advocating for ethical practices.
      • Engage with other healthcare professionals and stakeholders to collaborate on public health initiatives and community outreach programs, enhancing the overall health of the community.
