South Africa is home to some of the most diverse and rich ecosystems in the world. Preserving this natural heritage is crucial for the well-being of both the environment and the people who depend on it. The South African National Parks (SANParks) plays a pivotal role in this mission, not only through the management of protected areas but also by fostering a new generation of environmental stewards.

Through the SANParks Bursary Programme, SANParks is calling on aspiring youth entering their first year of undergraduate studies in the 2025 academic year to join this prestigious external bursary programme.

    What SANParks Does

SANParks, established under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No 57 of 2003), is mandated with the conservation of South Africa’s biodiversity, landscapes, and associated heritage. This organization ensures that national parks are not just places of beauty and conservation but also serve as catalysts for socioeconomic development, particularly for communities living adjacent to these parks.

One of SANParks’ key strategic objectives is to grow community support, provide access, and share benefits with local communities. In line with this mission, the SANParks Bursary Programme is designed to uplift children from these communities, offering them the opportunity to pursue higher education in fields that align with SANParks’ conservation and community development goals.

    The SANParks Bursary Programme

The SANParks Bursary Programme is an initiative aimed at providing financial support to deserving students from communities neighboring South Africa’s national parks. This comprehensive bursary scheme is not just a ticket to higher education; it is a pathway to becoming part of the next generation of environmental and community leaders.

    Fields of Study

The bursary programme is open to students pursuing degrees or national diplomas in the following fields:

    • Environmental Sciences: Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, Green Energy, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Development, and Game Ranch Management.
    • Tourism: Hospitality Management, Resort Management, Tour Guide, Events and Conference Management.
    • Social Sciences: Community Development, Economic Development, Socio-Economic Development, and related Development studies.

These fields are critical in advancing SANParks’ mission of conservation and community empowerment. By supporting students in these areas, SANParks ensures that its legacy of biodiversity preservation and community involvement continues to thrive.

    Eligibility and Requirements

The SANParks Bursary Programme is highly competitive and requires applicants to meet several criteria:

    • South African Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens.
    • Residency: Priority is given to learners from communities living adjacent to national parks, as defined in SANParks’ management plans.
    • Educational Status: Applicants must be entering their first year of post-matric studies in 2025 at an accredited institution of higher education. The bursary is also open to students attending TVET colleges.
    • Academic Performance: For students already registered at institutions of higher education, a 100% pass rate is required, meaning they must have passed all the courses they registered for in the previous study period.
    • Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old.
    • Additional Considerations: The selection process will also consider academic merit, with a focus on increasing the participation of women, people living with disabilities, and individuals from designated groups.
