What Does the SARB Do?
The SARB plays a pivotal role in South Africa’s economic stability and prosperity. Its responsibilities encompass maintaining price and financial stability, regulating the financial sector, managing interest rates, overseeing the distribution of banknotes and coin, and ensuring the stability of the banking sector and the broader financial system. With data science becoming increasingly integral to these functions, the SARB has launched a Data Science Graduate Development Programme to cultivate talent in this field.
The Essence of Data Science
Data science is an interdisciplinary field that harnesses scientific methods, algorithms, and systems to glean insights and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. The Data Science Graduate Development Programme at the SARB focuses on building advanced analytics capabilities within the central banking sphere. As a participant, you will delve into the core of data science and its applications in central banking.
The Programme’s Format
Graduates accepted into the programme will be stationed within the Business Solutions and Technology Department (BSTD) at the SARB from February to December 2024. This immersive experience offers a blend of technical training and real-world application. Participants will work on unique and complex business problems while also attending learning interventions at the SARB Academy. The programme also provides opportunities for specialisation in the Data Science track.
Job Requirements
Possess or be in the process of completing a postgraduate qualification (coursework ideally completed) in one of the specified fields:
- Data Science.
- Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence.
- Be a South African citizen.
- Demonstrate curiosity, innovation, and strong analytical skills.
- Exhibit a proven track record of academic excellence with an overall average mark of 65% and above.
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Showcase evidence of participation in data science competitions (e.g., Kaggle) and/or contributions to projects on GitHub/Gitlab (an added advantage).

Selection Process
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in interviews, undergo a psychometric assessment, and an appropriate reference check, and complete a security clearance as part of the selection process.
