The Department of Infrastructure is offering a variety of funded apprenticeship opportunities in the construction sector for young South Africans eager to build their careers in this dynamic field. These opportunities are spread across different regions in the Western Cape, and successful candidates will undergo a comprehensive training program lasting three years and six months.

    Apprenticeship Opportunities Overview

The apprenticeship programs provide valuable hands-on experience in various construction trades. Successful applicants will undergo:

    • Institutional practical training,
    • On-site training at construction sites,
    • Applying health and safety regulations,
    • Maintaining work areas, and
    • Undertaking administrative tasks.

Upon completion, apprentices will be equipped with practical and theoretical knowledge to thrive in the construction sector. Not only will they gain valuable skills, but they will also contribute to the building and infrastructure development of the Western Cape.

    Regions Offering Apprenticeships

The apprenticeship opportunities are available in three key regions in the Western Cape: the Garden Route District, the Overberg District, and the Central Karoo District. Each region has specific requirements for applicants, and the apprenticeships are available in different trades, including electrical work and bricklaying.

    Garden Route District: Electrical Apprenticeship

The Western Cape Government is inviting qualified applicants from the Garden Route District to apply for the funded Electrical apprenticeship. Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

    • Aged between 18 and 30 years,
    • South African citizens,
    • Unemployed and residing in the Garden Route District,
    • Possess an Occupational Certificate in Electrical (NQF L1), TVET equivalent, with a pass in Pure Mathematics and Science.

Applicants will also be expected to have good written and verbal communication skills in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape.

    Stipend: R5,500 per month.

    Overberg District: Bricklaying Apprenticeship

The Overberg District is offering apprenticeship opportunities in Bricklaying. Those interested should meet the following criteria:

    • Aged between 18 and 30 years,
    • South African citizens,
    • Unemployed and residing in the Overberg District,
    • Possess an Occupational Certificate in Bricklaying (NQF L3), TVET equivalent, with a pass in Mathematical Literacy.

As with the electrical apprenticeship, successful candidates must be prepared to work on construction sites, apply health and safety regulations, and undertake various site-related tasks.

    Stipend: R5,500 per month.

    Central Karoo District: Electrical Apprenticeship

The Central Karoo District also has opportunities for those looking to pursue a career in electrical work. To qualify, applicants must meet the following conditions:

    • Aged between 18 and 30 years,
    • South African citizens,
    • Unemployed and residing in the Central Karoo District,
    • Possess an Occupational Certificate in Electrical (NQF L1), TVET equivalent, with a pass in Pure Mathematics and Science.

Like their counterparts in the Garden Route District, successful applicants in the Central Karoo District will receive a stipend of R5,500 per month and will be required to work on construction sites across the Western Cape.

    Key Competencies and Skills Required

To be considered for any of the apprenticeship programs, applicants must demonstrate the following competencies and skills:

    • Technical skills: The ability to carry out tasks practically in the relevant trade.
    • Numeracy skills: A sound understanding of mathematics, essential for both electrical and bricklaying apprenticeships.
    • Literacy skills: Good reading and writing abilities, crucial for documentation and communication on-site.
    • Knowledge of the relevant trade: Familiarity with the chosen field, whether electrical work or bricklaying, is highly advantageous.
    • General knowledge of the built environment: Understanding construction practices and processes is a plus.

Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to develop these competencies in a real-world environment while earning a stipend.

    Requirements for All Apprenticeships

In addition to the specific qualifications required for each apprenticeship, applicants must also:

    • Be willing to undergo a medical examination and substance abuse test,
    • Be prepared to travel to various construction sites across the Western Cape,
    • Be ready to sign an apprenticeship contract with the Department of Infrastructure.
