    The National Research Foundation (NRF) and the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) are thrilled to announce two exciting vacant posts for General Worker in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.

    The National Research Foundation (NRF) and the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) are excited to announce two available positions for General Workers in Carnarvon, Northern Cape. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team that supports and promotes scientific research and technological advancement in South Africa.

    About NRF and SARAO

    The National Research Foundation (NRF) plays a pivotal role in funding research, developing human capital, and providing national research facilities across various scientific disciplines. The NRF is dedicated to fostering a culture of science and innovation through numerous outreach programs.

    SARAO, a national facility managed by NRF, leads South Africa’s involvement in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA) project. This includes managing radio astronomy instruments and programs such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo and the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng. SARAO’s efforts extend across nine African countries, promoting human capital development and commercialisation of scientific endeavors.

    Job Responsibilities

    As a General Worker, you will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Karoo site. Your key responsibilities will include:

    • Inspecting and Maintaining Infrastructure: Regularly check and repair fences, gates, windmills, dams, and farm roads.
    • Operating Equipment: Handle heavy and light machinery, including the Honey Sucker, for various tasks.
    • Trench Work and Tree Trimming: Dig trenches and trim trees to maintain clear paths and safety.
    • Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Clean and perform maintenance on all vehicles and equipment.
    • Power Line and Waste Management: Assist in maintaining power lines and managing waste disposal.
    • Fencing and Graveyard Maintenance: Install and repair fences; upkeep graveyards by keeping them clean and orderly.
    • Garden and Orchard Care: Maintain and nurture gardens and orchards, including watering, weeding, and pruning.
    • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and wear PPE; report hazards promptly.
    • Supporting Scientific Operations: Assist scientific teams with basic tasks related to research activities.
    • Training Participation: Engage in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
    • Community Outreach: Participate in educational and community support programs.
    • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment usage.
    • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with team members to ensure efficient task completion.
    • Environmental Stewardship: Implement environmental best practices, including waste disposal and conservation measures.
    • Site Security: Monitor access points and follow security protocols to maintain site safety.

    Key Requirements

    • Minimum: Grade 10
    • Driver’s license (advantageous)
    • At least 2 years of experience as a general worker in construction or farming.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Familiarity with safety procedures.
    • Ability to operate common hand tools (both electrical and mechanical).
    • Comfortable working at heights and lifting heavy objects.
    • Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimal supervision.
    • Physically and mentally fit to handle strenuous tasks.
    • Safety-oriented, sober habits, trustworthy, and reliable.
