    The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has launched the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) to foster academic excellence and address critical skill shortages in South Africa’s higher education institutions. The nGAP initiative aims to nurture young academics by offering them unique opportunities to develop their careers, particularly in fields that are essential to the country’s development.


    About the University of Mpumalanga (UMP)

    The University of Mpumalanga is a dynamic institution that provides a relevant, engaged, and sustainable learning environment. UMP is dedicated to offering outstanding academic programs that not only meet the economic and skill needs of the Mpumalanga Province but also contribute significantly to the broader South African context.

    The institution’s commitment to academic excellence and societal impact is evident in its participation in the DHET’s New Generation of Academics Programme. This program offers young academics the chance to be part of a transformative journey, shaping the future of education and research in South Africa.

    Job Primary Purpose

    The successful applicant will have a strong academic background in Plant Production, including Plant Genetics, or an equivalent field. The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Plant Production or a related area and be committed to advancing their academic career through further studies and research.

    Key Performance Areas

    The role within the nGAP framework at UMP will focus on the following areas:

    1. Academic Development:
      • Engage in teaching and learning activities within the School of Agricultural Science, contributing to the academic growth of students.
      • Develop and deliver curricula that are relevant to the needs of the agricultural sector, with a particular focus on Plant Breeding and Genetics.
    2. Research:
      • Undertake research projects that contribute to the field of Plant Breeding, aiming to address both local and national challenges in agriculture.
      • Publish research findings in reputable journals and present at academic conferences.
    3. Community Engagement:
      • Participate in community outreach programs that support sustainable agricultural practices in the Mpumalanga Province.
      • Collaborate with local farmers, industry stakeholders, and governmental bodies to implement research findings in practical settings.
    4. Professional Development:
      • Commit to ongoing professional development by pursuing a doctoral degree in Plant Breeding or a related field.
      • Participate in academic mentoring and training programs provided by the university to enhance teaching and research skills.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be eligible for this position under the nGAP initiative, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    1. Educational Qualifications:
      • A Master’s degree in Plant Production, Plant Genetics, or an equivalent field.
      • Undergraduate and Honours qualifications that include a major in Plant Production or a related discipline.
    2. Citizenship and Age:
      • Must be a South African Citizen.
      • Must be 40 years or younger.
    3. Commitment to Further Studies:
      • Willingness and ability to undertake and complete a doctoral degree in Plant Breeding or a related field.
    4. Demographic Considerations:
      • At least 80% of positions in this program are intended for black and/or women South African citizens, reflecting the program’s commitment to equity and transformation in higher education.
