The successful candidate will play a crucial role in investigating gender-based complaints, managing disciplinary inquiries, and supporting gender equity advocacy within the university.

Key Responsibilities

As a Legal Officer at Wits, your main duties will include:

1. Investigating Gender-Based Complaints

  • Receiving and investigating complaints of sexual/gender violence, bullying, harassment, discrimination, and other gender-related issues.
  • Conducting thorough investigations and compiling detailed reports.
  • Ensuring fair and just processes for all involved parties.

2. Managing Disciplinary Inquiries

  • Overseeing and coordinating disciplinary processes in cases handled by the GEO.
  • Ensuring that all inquiries are in line with the university’s gender-related misconduct policies.
  • Working with legal and university stakeholders to uphold procedural fairness.

3. Policy Engagement & Compliance

  • Understanding, interpreting, and implementing gender equity policies.
  • Providing expert legal advice and solutions based on institutional policies and frameworks.
  • Supporting the development and review of gender equity policies.

4. Supporting Staff & Students

  • Providing a compassionate and professional service to students and staff engaging with the GEO.
  • Building a safe and supportive environment for those affected by gender-based misconduct.

5. Relationship-Building & Advocacy

  • Networking with other university offices that deal with student welfare, legal issues, and HR policies.
  • Assisting with gender awareness programs, advocacy campaigns, and preventative measures to combat discrimination.
  • Contributing to discussions and forums on institutional gender dynamics.

Job Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Educational Qualifications

  • A law degree or equivalent diploma is required.

2. Work Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of professional experience in legal practice or gender justice-related roles.

3. Essential Skills & Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of gendered power relations and institutional patriarchy.
  • Strong investigative skills and the ability to handle sensitive complaints.
  • Analytical and reporting skills for producing accurate investigative reports.
  • Empathetic and effective communication to engage with complainants and accused individuals.
  • Ability to work under pressure while managing multiple cases simultaneously.
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn.
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of accountability.
  • Willingness to work overtime when necessary.
