    The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is offering a dynamic and rewarding opportunity for a highly skilled, results-driven auditor to join its Taxpayer Engagement Division. Based in Gauteng South, this position is designed for professionals who exhibit sound judgment, business acumen, and the ability to thrive under limited supervision.


    The successful candidate will contribute to reducing the tax gap and supporting the government’s tax compliance strategy through focused audits across multiple tax types.

    This role provides the chance to operate within a high-performing team of like-minded individuals, conducting impactful projects aimed at strengthening national compliance efforts.

    The Auditor Role and Responsibilities

    Job Purpose

    The role requires performing standard audits across multiple tax types, utilizing a risk profile basis to identify potential tax compliance issues. The Auditor Level 1 is expected to work autonomously while ensuring all activities comply with the relevant legislative requirements.

    Core Responsibilities

    1. Compliance and Risk Management:
      • Conduct limited scope audits to ensure compliance with the relevant tax acts.
      • Identify additional risks and provide feedback to the relevant business unit.
      • Keep abreast of relevant acts, legislation, and regulations affecting audit work.
    2. Quality Assurance and Efficiency:
      • Plan and schedule activities to continuously enhance quality and service delivery.
      • Apply practical knowledge to interpret trends and identify risks.
    3. Client and Team Engagement:
      • Foster productive working relationships with peers and team members.
      • Provide specialist support to meet or exceed customer service expectations.
    4. Governance and Cost-Effectiveness:
      • Adhere to governance and compliance procedures.
      • Implement cost-effective methods to reduce financial costs while maintaining quality.

    Skills and Competencies

    Behavioural Competencies:

    • Self-Control and Integrity: Demonstrating a strong ethical foundation and reliability.
    • Attention to Detail: Ensuring precision and accuracy in all audit activities.
    • Organisational Awareness: Understanding the strategic objectives of SARS.
    • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Staying updated with the latest trends and practices in auditing.

    Technical Competencies:

    • Proficiency in Audit Methodology, Operational Audits, and Risk Identification.
    • Expertise in Legal Writing Skills, Problem Analysis, and Judgment.
    • Strong understanding of Functional Policies and Procedures and Efficiency Improvement.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Minimum Requirements:

    1. Qualification Options:
      • National Diploma / Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) in Forensic Investigations or a related field, with 2–3 years of experience in Tax Audit/Forensic Financial Investigations, including at least one year at knowledge worker level.
      • OR a Senior Certificate (NQF 4) with 5 years of relevant experience.
    2. Added Advantage:
      • A related Degree or Advanced Diploma will provide an edge.

    Functional Requirements:

    • Sound knowledge of legislation, policies, and SOPs governing tax audits.
    • Ability to communicate and escalate issues effectively.
