    The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has announced an exciting job opportunity for a Cashbook & Grants Accountant to join its Finance team under the Revenue & Expenditure department.     Primary Purpose of the Cashbook & Grants Accountant Job

    The Cashbook & Grants Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accurate and efficient capturing and allocation of all receipts and payments at UMP, encompassing all bank and investment accounts, as well as conditional grants. This role plays a pivotal part in maintaining the financial integrity of the university’s operations and is essential for the effective management of UMP’s financial resources.

    Key Performance Areas

    1. Cashbook Processing and Reconciliation: The accountant will handle the daily processing and reconciliation of cashbooks, ensuring that financial records are accurate and up to date.
    2. Investment Processing and Reconciliation: Responsibilities include tracking, processing, and reconciling UMP’s investments, which are essential for the university’s financial sustainability.
    3. Conditional Grant Transactions Processing: The role involves overseeing the allocation, processing, and reconciliation of conditional grants, ensuring funds are used as intended and comply with grant stipulations.
    4. Petty Cash and Credit Card Processing and Reconciliation: Accurate management of petty cash and credit card transactions will be essential for daily operational expenses, with reconciliation being a key part of the role.

    Minimum Requirements

    To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • Education: M+3 or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or an equivalent qualification.
    • Experience: A minimum of 4 years’ experience in cashbook investments and grants is required. Previous experience in the Higher Education sector will be advantageous.

    The ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in:

    • Attention to Detail: Precision in financial documentation is crucial for maintaining accurate records and avoiding costly errors.
    • Time Management: The ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for preparing financial reports and liaising with team members and other stakeholders.
    • Reporting Skills: Proficiency in reporting financial data clearly and accurately to support decision-making processes within the university.
