    Are you a seasoned construction project manager looking for a challenging new role? The Department of Public Works in South Africa is looking to hire a Chief Construction Project Manager for their Durban Regional Office.     About The Department of Public Works

    The Department of Public Works is committed to equality and affirmative action in the workplace.     Job Requirements

    • Educational Background: A Senior Certificate and a relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a technical field related to the built environment, with at least six years of post-qualification experience.
    • Professional Registration: Must be registered as a Professional Construction Project Manager with the SACPCMP.

    Skills required for the Chief Construction Project Manager position:

    • Programme and Project Management: Proficiency in managing and overseeing projects from initiation to completion.
    • Project Design and Analysis: Ability to design project frameworks and analyze project outcomes effectively.
    • Legal and Operational Compliance: Knowledge of relevant laws and the ability to ensure projects comply with all regulations.
    • Creating High-Performance Cultures: Skills in developing and nurturing environments that achieve superior performance.
    • Strategic Leadership: Capability to lead strategically, guiding projects and teams towards achieving long-term goals.
    • Financial Management: Competence in managing budgets, financial forecasting, and cost control.
    • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using computer software relevant to project management and general office tasks.
    • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Problem Solving: Ability to identify issues and logically solve them with effective solutions.
    • Decision Making: Strong decision-making skills with a focus on making timely and judicious choices.
    • Conflict Management: Skills in managing and resolving conflicts within teams and project stakeholders.
    • Negotiation: Strong negotiation skills to effectively handle contracts and any project-related negotiations.
    • Research: Capability to conduct thorough research and data analysis to support project decisions and strategies.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Monitor the performance of project managers under his/her supervision.
    • Mentor, develop and offer technical support to improve performance.
    • Manage construction projects on his/her own, ranging from large scale capital projects to maintenance projects and service contracts.
    • Ensure that the needs of the clients are well interpreted into manageable scopes of work.
    • Procure the services of built environment professionals through stipulated supply chain management process.
    • Coordinate the work of various professionals to ensure the required design and documentation quality as well as delivery is in accordance with the project execution plans.
    • Coordinate all internal resources required to ensure the bidding process for appointment of contractors.
    • Ensure that appointed consultants manage the quality of work within their professional scope and responsibility.
    • Ensure that contractors timeously receive relevant specifications and details to contracts.
    • Adjudicate all applications of variation orders and extensions of time, and make recommendations to the approving authority within the Department.
    • Process all interim monthly payments as per conditions of contract and in line with the Government’s commitment to pay invoices timeously.
    • Prepare and submit project information to be filled to the Head of Directorate.
    • Secure all required funding for the projects through internal set processes.
    • Ensure that project information is filled appropriately for easy access during audit.
    • Cultivate a culture for good working relationships with fellow colleagues within the Department.
