    For the 2025 academic year, university students have a great opportunity to apply for a full-time bursary program offered by the Council for Geoscience (CGS). In order to ensure that South Africa continues to generate top-tier experts in this field, this effort seeks to foster and grow knowledge in geosciences and associated technical disciplines. CGS is making sure the nation keeps a solid foundation in earth sciences and associated research by providing financial support in these specialised disciplines.

    The CGS bursary programme is designed to support students pursuing studies in the following areas:

    • Geology
    • Computational Geosciences
    • Economic Geology
    • Engineering Geology
    • Environmental Geology and Environmental Science
    • Exploration Geology and other related geoscience disciplines
    • Geo-informatics
    • Geochemistry
    • Geo-chronology
    • Geohazards
    • Geomagnetism
    • Geophysics
    • Geotechnical Investigations
    • Hydrogeology (with a focus on groundwater modeling)
    • Marine Geology
    • Mineral Economics
    • Mining Seismology
    • Paleontology
    • Remote Sensing
    • Seismology

    What the CGS Bursary Covers

    The bursary is comprehensive, alleviating the financial burden that often comes with tertiary education. The funding includes:

    • Registration and tuition fees

    • A once-off laptop allowance for first-time recipients

    Eligibility Criteria for the Bursary

      • A certified copy of their identity document (ID).

      • A certified copy of their matric results.
      • An acceptance letter from the university.
