    Are you a detail-oriented individual with a passion for data management and community-focused research? The Centre for Community-Based Research (CCBR), located in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, is looking for five dedicated individuals to join their team as Data Assistants. This is an incredible opportunity for individuals who want to contribute to important public health research projects that aim to impact communities positively.


    If you have a Grade 12 qualification, experience in data entry, and are eager to work in a research setting, this fixed-term, 12-month contract role may be perfect for you!

    About CCBR and the Public Health, Societies and Belonging Department

    The CCBR operates within the “Public Health, Societies and Belonging” (PHSB) business area, which focuses on research and interventions that contribute to public health improvements. The research team at CCBR works on multi-year projects that address key public health issues within community settings. CCBR is known for working closely with the communities it serves, ensuring that the research it conducts is practical, impactful, and beneficial to local populations.

    • Contract Duration: 12 months (Fixed Term Contract – Long Term)
    • Number of Positions: 5

    Minimum Requirements:

    To be considered for the role of Data Assistant, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • Educational Qualification: NQF 4 (Grade 12) or equivalent.
    • Computer Literacy: You must demonstrate proficiency in computer skills.
    • Experience: At least one year of experience in:
      • Data entry (accurate and efficient data capturing).
      • Working in a research environment, specifically identifying data collection errors and implementing corrections according to good clinical practice guidelines.
      • Implementing data processing procedures for multiple research projects following approved protocols.
    • Language Proficiency: Fluency in both isiZulu and English is essential for this role.
    • Flexibility: Candidates must be willing to work over weekends when required.

    Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

    While not mandatory, the following qualifications and skills will give you an edge:

    • Tertiary Qualification: A 3-year qualification in a relevant field (data management, public health, or social sciences) will be highly beneficial.
    • Teamwork and Communication: Strong ability to work within a multi-disciplinary research team and contribute positively.
    • Organizational Skills: Ability to work under strict deadlines, problem-solve, and manage workloads independently.
    • Commitment: Willingness to contribute actively to the research team’s performance and uphold the integrity of the project protocols.

    Key Responsibilities:

    As a Data Assistant, your role will include the following key responsibilities:

    1. Data Processing and Quality Checks:
      • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned projects, overseeing data processing tasks and ensuring data quality as per the approved research protocols.
    2. Documentation Management:
      • Supervise the issuing and receipt of study documentation to ensure all paperwork is correctly managed.
      • Ensure proper filing, document management, and archival for the projects.
    3. Data Entry and Transmission:
      • Manage timely data entry within the agreed benchmarks to ensure high data quality.
      • Handle data transmission and data downloads from the tools used for data collection.
    4. Data Audits and Query Resolution:
      • Conduct quarterly data audits to identify potential discrepancies or missing data.
      • Flag missing or incomplete data for resolution and address queries related to data processing.
      • Report on any issues that arise regarding data quality and completeness.
    5. Problem-Solving and Team Collaboration:
      • Collaborate closely with project personnel to ensure smooth data processing workflows and high standards of data accuracy.
      • Actively participate in solving data-related challenges, ensuring that the research adheres to good clinical practice guidelines.
