    Polokwane Municipality, located in the Capricorn District of Limpopo Province, is offering exciting job opportunities for seasonal lifeguards under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).     Lifeguards Job Overview

    • Job Title: Seasonal Lifeguards (EPWP)
    • Number of Positions Available: 7
    • Duration: 6-month contract
    • Salary: R271.14 per day
    • Closing date: 11 September 2024

    Requirements

    To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • Education:
      • A Grade 12 certificate (Matric).
      • A valid Lifeguard Certificate, certified by Lifesaving South Africa.
      • First Aid Level 2 certification.
    • Experience:
      • At least 1-2 years of relevant experience in lifeguarding, swimming instruction, or any water-related activities is advantageous.
      • Any certification in basic water testing, swimming instruction, or lifesaving techniques is a plus.
    • Physical Requirements:
      • Must be physically fit and able-bodied to perform rescue tasks, support swimming activities, and respond quickly to emergencies.
      • Clear criminal record, with no pending criminal cases or sentences.
      • Ability to pass the required fitness test as per Lifesaving South Africa standards.
    • Communication Skills:
      • Excellent communication skills, both in handling safety instructions and interacting with the public.
      • Lifeguards must be able to issue clear instructions and warnings to swimmers to ensure safety.
    • Legal and Safety Compliance:
      • Must follow all legal requirements and uphold the rules of Polokwane Municipality.
      • Drug-free and relevant proof of this status is required.

    Responsibilities

    Lifeguards play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of swimmers and overseeing all activities in and around the pool or water areas. Key responsibilities and skills for the EPWP Lifeguards at Polokwane Municipality include:

    1. Supervision of Swimmers:
      • Monitor water conditions and swimmer behavior.
      • Ensure all safety rules are followed to prevent accidents or injuries.
    2. Respond to Emergencies:
      • Be prepared to perform rescues in case of swimming accidents or near-drowning incidents.
      • Apply first aid and, if necessary, perform CPR to stabilize swimmers before emergency services arrive.
    3. Observation and Quick Action:
      • Lifeguards must be observant, identifying potential dangers early and acting quickly to prevent harm.
      • They should stay alert to swimmer distress signals and weather changes that may pose a risk.
    4. Maintenance of Pool Area:
      • Maintain clean and safe pool surroundings.
      • Inspect the pool, water quality, and poolside areas regularly to ensure everything is in good condition and free from hazards.
    5. Report Issues:
      • Lifeguards are required to inform the Facility Manager of any unsafe conditions, such as weather issues, faulty equipment, or concerns with the swimming area.
    6. Collaboration and Communication:
      • Coordinate with other staff and lifeguards to manage busy days and events efficiently.
      • Communicate with swimmers and other visitors about safety regulations, restricted areas, and swim times.
    7. Weather and Water Safety:
      • Continuously monitor water and weather conditions and make appropriate decisions regarding pool closures or evacuation during storms.
