    The Road Accident Fund (RAF), a cornerstone institution in South Africa’s legal and governance landscape, has announced a vacancy for the position of RAF Attorney: High Court at its Johannesburg office. This strategic, fixed-term position aligns with the Fund’s mission to provide timely rehabilitation and compensation for individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents, while promoting road safety.


    With a competitive salary of R1,028,791.00 and a three-year tenure, the role is a unique opportunity for seasoned legal professionals to contribute to the organization’s litigation and governance frameworks.

    Purpose of the Attorney Role

    The RAF Attorney: High Court will manage all High Court matters involving the Fund, ensuring effective litigation services. The role extends to performing tax services, including tax bills of costs, in compliance with South African laws and regulations.

    Key Responsibilities

    The appointed attorney will undertake a wide range of responsibilities, including:

    1. Policy Review and Implementation:

    • Contributing to departmental policies and aligning them with effective practices.

    2. Litigation Preparation and Research:

    • Conducting in-depth research for trial preparation.
    • Consulting with internal stakeholders and witnesses for case documentation.
    • Drafting pleadings to solidify the Fund’s legal stance.

    3. Mediation Oversight:

    • Managing the mediation process as per amended court rules.
    • Facilitating post-mediation documentation and communication with the Registrar.

    4. Legal Representation:

    • Representing RAF in High Court litigation matters, mediations, and tribunal hearings.
    • Ensuring meticulous administration and adherence to trial timelines.

    5. Settlement Facilitation:

    • Encouraging early file assessments and expert consultations to settle cases before trial.

    6. Legal Advisory:

    • Providing expert legal opinions on arising matters and internal contracts.
    • Conducting legal research to address organizational concerns.

    7. Taxation:

    • Delivering comprehensive tax services in line with legal regulations.
    • Building client relationships and offering innovative tax solutions.

    8. Reporting and Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Compiling detailed reports to inform management decisions.
    • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to manage relationships and compliance.

    9. People Management:

    • Sourcing and retaining high-performing legal talent.
    • Overseeing staff development, performance, and workplace engagement.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (or equivalent).
    • Postgraduate qualification in Law.
    • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court or Advocate with the right of appearance.

    Experience:

    • A minimum of 5–7 years of legal practice post-graduation, including two years specializing in personal injury litigation.

    Skills and Competencies

    The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

    • Expertise in South African MVA law, claims litigation, and governance.
    • Strong skills in mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
    • Proficiency in policy formulation, risk management, and project execution.
    • Behavioral attributes such as resilience, ethical judgment, and client service orientation.

    Employment Terms

    This T.A.S.K Grade 16 position is structured as a Total Employment Cost package, allowing successful candidates to tailor their remuneration according to individual needs.
