The North-West University (NWU) in Mahikeng is looking for a Librarian – Faculty Services (N001073) to join their Library and Information Services Department.     Job Purpose

    The Librarian – Faculty Services position focuses on:

    • Providing subject-specific information services to students and faculty members.
    • Supporting postgraduate students and researchers in finding and evaluating academic sources.
    • Training students and staff on information literacy and research tools.
    • Enhancing library services and promoting resources available to users.
    • Managing library collections and ensuring access to up-to-date academic materials.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a librarian in this role, you will be expected to undertake the following tasks:

    1. Advanced Information Service

    • Provide specialized research and reference services to postgraduate students, researchers, and academic staff.
    • Assist users in accessing and using electronic and printed resources effectively.
    • Stay updated on the latest developments in library and information technology.
    • Handle electronic requests and ensure users receive timely support.
    • Work at the information desk as required and maintain daily statistics.
    • Engage with faculties to identify their information needs.
    • Contribute to improving students’ literacy skills through innovative library services.

    2. Training and Information Literacy

    • Plan and conduct information literacy training for faculty staff and students.
    • Organize workshops and seminars on research methods and database usage.
    • Provide individual and group training sessions to equip students with library research skills.
    • Participate in library orientation, open days, and educational events.

    3. Online Content Development

    • Develop and maintain LibGuides for specific faculties.
    • Update LibGuides to ensure they remain useful and relevant.
    • Market these resources to faculty staff and students.

    4. Liaison, Marketing, and Outreach

    • Act as the primary link between the library and faculty members.
    • Promote library services, new acquisitions, and research resources.
    • Attend faculty meetings and events to provide library-related insights.
    • Organize marketing initiatives to enhance the visibility of library services.

    5. Collection Management and Control

    • Identify gaps in the library collection and recommend new books, journals, and databases.
    • Ensure the library budget is used effectively for resource acquisition.
    • Regularly review and update library materials to maintain relevance.
    • Assess the effectiveness of the current library collection and suggest improvements.

    6. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

    • Participate in OHS meetings and training.
    • Assist in ensuring the library maintains safe and compliant workspaces.
    • Report any safety concerns and actively engage in fire drills and emergency planning.

    Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

    To qualify for the Librarian – Faculty Services position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    Educational Qualifications:

    • A B. Lib / B. Inf (NQF Level 7) or a Bachelor’s degree plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Library and/or Information Science (NQF Level 8).
    • Membership with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).

    Work Experience:

    • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience providing general and advanced information services to academic users.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • A postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in Information Science is recommended.

    Key Skills and Competencies

    The ideal candidate should possess the following skills and abilities:

    Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in electronic and printed information sources.
    • Ability to search, evaluate, and recommend academic resources.
    • Strong computer literacy and knowledge of MS Office.
    • Familiarity with academic library structures and research activities.
    • Ability to support students’ information literacy skills.

    Behavioral Competencies:

    • Passion for knowledge and learning.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Excellent client-service orientation.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Analytical skills and attention to detail.
    • High ethical standards and professional integrity.

    Remuneration and Benefits

    The total annual remuneration package will be in line with NWU’s policy guidelines and the level of the appointment.
