    The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is excited to announce a permanent job opportunity for an Operational Manager Nursing in the paediatric orthopedic ward at the Red Cross Children’s War Memorial Hospital in Rondebosch.


    This role is crucial for individuals passionate about nursing and paediatric care, offering a chance to make a significant impact in healthcare.

    Operational Manager Nursing Vacancy Overview

    • Position: Operational Manager Nursing (Specialty Area: Pediatrics – Orthopedic Ward)
    • Employment Type: Permanent
    • Location: Red Cross Children’s War Memorial Hospital, Rondebosch, Western Cape
      Reference No: RXH2/2024
    • Salary: R 627,474 – R 703,752 per annum plus service benefits (13th cheque, employer’s contribution to the pension fund, housing, and medical aid allowance)
    • Closing Date: 5/10/2024

    Requirements

    • Qualifications:
      • Basic R425 qualification (diploma/degree in nursing) or equivalent allowing registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse.
      • A post-basic nursing qualification with a duration of at least 1 year, accredited with SANC in Child Nursing Science, Medical and Surgical Nursing Science in Trauma and Emergency, or Orthopaedics.
    • Experience:
      • Minimum of 9 years of experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
      • At least 5 years of recognisable experience in the specified specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification in Child Nursing Science.
    • Skills:
      • Proficiency in computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
      • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, organisational, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Registration: Must be registered with the SANC as a Professional Nurse.

    The successful candidate for the Operational Manager Nursing position will need to exhibit a robust set of competencies that support the diverse demands of managing a paediatric orthopaedic ward.

    • In-depth Knowledge of Nursing Legislation and Ethics:
      • Possess a comprehensive understanding of current nursing legislation, healthcare regulations, and ethical guidelines, and be able to apply this knowledge effectively to ensure compliance and high standards of care.
      • Stay updated with changes in the legal framework surrounding healthcare to anticipate and implement required changes in nursing practice and policy.
    • Promotion of High-Quality Clinical Nursing Practices:
      • Monitor and evaluate the nursing care provided by staff, ensuring it aligns with professional standards and best practices.
      • Advocate for and implement evidence-based practices that enhance patient safety, care quality, and treatment effectiveness.
    • Strong Interpersonal and Leadership Skills:
      • Exhibit strong leadership qualities that motivate and inspire nursing staff to perform at their best.
      • Utilize excellent communication skills to facilitate clear, effective interactions among healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
    • Advanced Organizational and Decision-Making Abilities:
      • Demonstrate the ability to organize workload and priorities effectively, even in fast-paced and stressful situations, ensuring efficient operation of the ward.
      • Make informed, timely decisions that reflect both an understanding of clinical details and broader operational requirements.
    • Conflict Resolution Skills:
      • Handle conflicts or disputes within the team or with patients and families in a manner that is professional, respectful, and conducive to a positive working environment.
      • Employ problem-solving skills to resolve issues swiftly and equitably, fostering a harmonious workplace.
    • Proficiency in People Management and Human Resources:
      • Understand and implement best practices in human resource management, including staffing, scheduling, performance evaluations, and professional development.
      • Engage with staff at all levels to ensure a supportive and inclusive work culture that values diversity and equal opportunity.
    • Financial Management Acumen:
      • Manage budgets and financial resources prudently, ensuring the ward operates within allocated funding while maximizing resource utilization.
      • Display a good grasp of financial policies and practices relevant to healthcare management, including cost control and financial reporting.
    • Computer and Technological Literacy:
      • Proficient in using computer software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, which are essential for administrative tasks, data management, and communication.
      • Leverage technology to improve healthcare delivery, data analysis, and reporting processes.
    • Understanding of FBU Functions and Collaborative Management:
      • Possess knowledge of Functional Business Units (FBUs) within the healthcare system, understanding their roles and contributions to overall service delivery.
      • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively across different FBUs, facilitating integrated and coordinated care approaches.

    Key Responsibilities

    As the Operational Manager Nursing for the paediatric orthopaedic ward, the selected candidate will be entrusted with a broad range of critical duties, each vital to the smooth and effective functioning of the ward. These responsibilities include:

    • Strategic Planning and Coordination:
      • Actively participate in the development and implementation of strategic objectives for nursing services within the hospital and align these with the broader goals of the Department of Health.
      • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of nursing practices and strategies in place, adjusting plans as necessary to meet healthcare demands and regulatory changes.
    • Management of Nursing Care:
      • Ensure the delivery of high-quality nursing care to paediatric patients, with particular attention to the unique needs of those in the orthopaedic ward.
      • Implement and maintain high standards of care, adhering to national and international healthcare standards and legal requirements.
      • Develop protocols and procedures to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care delivery.
    • Clinical Supervision and Oversight:
      • Provide leadership and guidance to nursing staff, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
      • Oversee the daily operations of the ward, ensuring that patient care is consistent, safe, and responsive to the needs of young patients and their families.
      • Monitor patient care practices and outcomes, intervening when necessary to ensure that the level of care provided meets the established standards.
    • Resource Management:
      • Manage both human and financial resources with a strategic approach, ensuring optimal use of personnel, equipment, and funds to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.
      • Prepare and manage budgets for the nursing department, advocate for resources as needed, and implement cost-effective measures without compromising patient care.
    • Commitment to a People-Centred Approach:
      • Champion a people-centred approach to healthcare, ensuring that all practices and policies are designed with the welfare of patients and staff in mind.
      • Encourage open communication, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices among all members of the healthcare team.
      • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the nursing staff, facilitating training and mentoring programs.
    • Advocacy for Quality Care:
      • Ensure that all nursing activities and interventions are performed within the scope of practice as defined by professional and regulatory standards.
      • Promote a culture of quality and excellence in nursing care, leading initiatives to enhance care delivery and patient satisfaction.
      • Regularly liaise with other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive care plans, ensuring that each patient’s specific needs are met.
    • Leadership and Professional Development:
      • Inspire and lead by example, demonstrating commitment to ethical practices, professional standards, and personal integrity.
      • Engage in professional development opportunities to stay informed of the latest developments in paediatric and orthopaedic nursing care.
      • Mentor and develop nursing staff, encouraging their professional growth and advancement.

    Additional Information

    • Shifts: Candidates must be willing to work shifts, public holidays, after-hours, night duty, and provide weekend cover.
    • Testing and Verification: Candidates may be subjected to a competency test. Appointment is contingent on positive outcomes from security clearance, qualification verification, criminal records, and previous employment checks.
