    The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is currently seeking to fill the Food Service Aid vacancy at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. This role plays a crucial part in providing nutritious meals to patients and staff in healthcare facilities, ensuring their well-being and recovery.

    Food Service Aid Vacancy Overview:

    • Job Title: Food Services AID
    • Salary: R125 373 per annum
    • Location:  Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital

    Minimum requirement:

    • Basic Reading Skills: Essential for understanding workplace documents, instructions, and manuals.
    • Basic Writing Skills: Necessary for completing forms, writing reports, and communicating in writing.
    • Numerical Skills: Important for measuring ingredients, calculating measurements, and interpreting data.
    • Relevant Experience: Prior experience in meal preparation and cooking within a hospital environment is crucial.
    • Shift Work: Willingness to work day shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
    • Physical Requirements: Capability to lift heavy equipment and stand for prolonged periods.
    • Dress Code: Adherence to departmental and food service specifications.
    • Work Schedule: Ability to work 10-hour day shifts and every second weekend, including public holidays.

    Competencies (knowledge/skills):

    • Cooking Skills: Proficiency in preparing meals, including special diets.
    • Hygiene and Safety Knowledge: Understanding of hygiene and safety procedures in an industrial food service setting.
    • Equipment Handling: Skill in using industrial kitchen equipment safely.
    • Communication: Strong ability to communicate effectively within a team.
    • Culinary Creativity: Aptitude for creating tasty and appealing meals.

    Duties:

    • Regular and Special Diet Meals: Prepare a wide range of dietary meals following strict nutritional guidelines to cater to the specific needs of patients, such as low-sodium, diabetic, and gluten-free options.
    • Menu Planning: Collaborate with dietitians and healthcare professionals to plan weekly menus that meet the dietary requirements and preferences of patients.
    • Cooking and Assembly: Execute cooking techniques that preserve the nutrient content of food, and assemble meals ensuring they are visually appealing and properly portioned.
    • Timely Service: Ensure meals are served on time, maintaining a schedule that aligns with patient medication and treatment regimes.
    • Patient Interaction: Provide friendly and respectful interaction with patients during meal service, offering brief explanations about the meals when necessary.
    • Feedback Collection: Gather and report feedback from patients and staff concerning meal preferences, quality, and presentation, which is crucial for continuous improvement.
    • Inventory Tracking: Monitor inventory levels of food supplies, kitchen utensils, and cleaning products to avoid shortages and overstock situations.
    • Ordering Supplies: Place orders for ingredients and supplies in accordance with the hospital’s budget and anticipated needs, ensuring cost-efficiency and waste reduction.
    • Receiving Deliveries: Check deliveries for accuracy and quality, including verifying expiration dates and the condition of goods received.
    • Sanitation Protocols: Implement and uphold strict sanitation protocols, regularly cleaning food preparation areas, cooking equipment, and serving stations to meet health and safety standards.
    • Waste Management: Efficiently manage waste by sorting recyclables, compostables, and refuse as per hospital policies.
    • Pest Control: Assist in maintaining a pest-free environment through proper food storage practices and regular inspections.
    • Regular Inspections: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance checks on kitchen equipment to ensure everything is functioning safely and efficiently.
    • Troubleshooting Minor Issues: Identify and troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions, coordinating with maintenance staff for repairs to minimize downtime.
    • Safety Audits: Participate in safety audits to ensure that all kitchen operations comply with legal and hospital standards.
